Tri-Valley Central
School: Only if you're on your
period Sunday, September 30th,
2007

At Tri-Valley Central School in New
York City, kids were outraged and started wearing tampons hanging out of
their pockets, on their clothes, and as purse strings in protest of the
"only when you're on your period" rule. The rule was being
enforced by security personnel at the high school (okay, my high school
never had security personnel, when did this start going
on). The real rule at Tri-Valley is that students can't carry
bags, but the exception is girls - but only you-know-when.
So girls who carried purses actually were
being asked by security guys, "Do you have your period?" Girls
reported being mortified at the question, and this month, the little
Sullivan County school has been full of teens with maxi pads stuck to
their shirts and red dots pinned to their chests.
Therefore everyone is in uproar, on and
on. The bag rule is for two reasons: they don't want the
kids to hurt their backs with heavy backpacks (so what are they supposed
to do, strap the books onto their backs with tampon strings?), and
because of security concerns about concealed weapons.
I don't know, would a metal detector not
solve this?
As you know, we love protests, so we're
offering our seasonal suggestions:
