What Each
Presidential Candidate Says About Super
Tuesday Thursday, January 31st, 2008
With Super Tuesday
just around the corner (next week!), both Republican and Democratic
candidates are revving up for the day - February 5th - in which voters
in 24 different states will be heading to the
polls to try and bring their nominees one step closer to
the 2008 Presidential Election.
Republican candidates
debated last night, and Democratic candidates will be debating
tonight at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
Because so many states
pushed their primary dates up, many commentators are dubbing this
"Tsunami Tuesday" instead of "Super Tuesday," as it's usually called;
52% of Democratic delegates and 41% of Republican delegates will be
attending primaries or caucuses for their state.
Here are all the
candidates still in the race, in alphabetical order, and what they have
to say about Super Tuesday:
|
 Hillary Clinton
|
"If you will stand with me, if you...will support
me on February 5th, I promise you that I will get up every single
day and wage a winning campaign against whomever the Republicans
nominate. I've been up against Republicans for a very long
time now.
"I was thinking the other day, wouldn't it be
nice if they just announced that they were embarrassed about what
happened to the country and they weren't going to run for the
White House again?" -Hillary Clinton's speech to Connecticut, 1/28/08 |
|
 Mike Huckabee
|
"Our campaign is full throttle toward Super
Tuesday where a number of key Southern states, and other strong
conservative states, are likely to add to our delegate count,
which already has us in second place in delegates before
Florida."
"We have a long way to go in this nominating
process. When you look at what we have done, with what we
have, it's a remarkable story that is not even close to being
over...I'm convinced that my optimistic message of hope and change
will continue to resonate with voters as we head into Super
Tuesday." -Statement from Mike Huckabee,
1/30/08 |
|
 John McCain
|
"My friends, in one week we will have as close to
a national primary as we have ever had in this country. I
intend to win it, and be the nominee of our party. And I
intend to do that by making it clear what I stand for...the
principles and policies that first attracted me to the Republican
Party...no matter the changing winds of political thought and
popular culture."
"I trust in the courage, good sense,
resourcefulness and decency of the American people, who deserve a
government that trusts in their qualities as well, and doesn't
abrogate to itself the responsibilities to do for the people what
the people can and want to do for themselves." -John McCain's
speech in Florida, 1/29/08 |
|
 Barack Obama
|
"[South Carolina voters showed] they wanted to
get beyond some of the racial politics that, you know, has been so
dominant in the past. We're very encouraged as we go to the
February 5th states."
"What I want to do is try as much as
possible to spend the remaining weeks and potentially months of
the campaign talking about issues that all Democrats should be
concerned about, and I think all Americans should be concerned
about...My suspicion is that by the time we get a Democratic
nominee, the party will be unified and it will be
energized." -Barack Obama's comments on Super Tuesday to ABC after the South
Carolina primary, 1/27/08 |
|
 Ron Paul
|
"Millions of Americans understand what ails our
country, and what is needed to fix it. So, with you at my
side, I am in this effort to win...our opponents would call that
nuts - you know, the advocates of more inflation, more spending,
more taxes, more war."
"On Super Tuesday, February 5th,
there will be 22 primaries and caucuses. I have a hunch that
we're going to do very well. But, of course, the media and
the rest of the establishment refuse to recognize that. It's
the attitude of a small child who covers his eyes to make
something scary go away. But we are not going away.
While the media focuses on the couple of states they claim are
important, we're competing everywhere." -Statement from Ron Paul,
1/29/08 |
|
 Mitt Romney
|
"I think one way to have them understand as they
increasingly do, that this has come down to a two-person
race. That with Mayor Giuliani out and with Mike Huckabee
having done so poorly here in Florida, that the options are me or
John McCain, and that will bring a lot of conservatives together,
if I'm successful in that effort. And I think in that case,
there's a ceiling as to how many votes Senator McCain will get,
that's the hope.
"I want to take my campaign to places like
California and Colorado and Georgia. And, of course,
Massachusetts and Maine and a lot of places where I have good
support already and where I think the narrowing of the field, if
you will, gives me a boost. Of course, Senator McCain is
going to be going to states where he thinks he has the best shot."
-Mitt Romney's press release, 1/30/08 |
