Domestic Abuse Shelters Take Cue, Let Pets In Too
Monday, June 15th, 2009 by Connie T.

In situations of animal abuse, it is common for the animal victims to be from a household where domestic
abuse actually took place, too. Last year, the Humane Society of the US
launched a campaign to promote allowing pets into shelters for families and victims of domestic abuse. Certainly an already-difficult
situation would be further strenuous with the added parting from a beloved pet. It's a doubly ideal situation: the human victim gets
to keep their companion, and the pet doesn't end up homeless.
Doorways for Women
and Families, one such shelter for women and children in need, has recently opened with the allowance of family pets to accompany
the residents. According to TheBark, it is the
ninth such shelter so far in the country.
Do a simple Google search
to find Domestic Violence Shelters in your state. Then, send them each off a quick e-mail or letter asking them to consider the PAWS program (Pets and Women's Shelters)
for their establishment.
