Earth Justice Working To Keep Largest Forest Off The Chopping Block
Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

The website EarthJustice - whose motto is "Because the Earth
needs a good lawyer" - has a new cause: keeping the Tongass National Forest
in southeastern Alaska off of the chopping block. (Tongass - who came up with
that name?)
The Tongass is 17 million acres long, and houses a
wide variety of wildlife; 2.3 million acres of which is in danger. According
to EarthJustice, the Bush administration wants to hack 13 percent of the forest
for roads and logging purposes. The administration announced in 2003 that it
was making the Tongass exempt from the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule.
Tongass is the largest national forest in the United States. EarthJustice has filed appeals with the Chief of the Forest Service in
Alaska, but is asking for your voice to help protect the wildlife habitat of
wild salmon, bears, eagles, wolves, and other animals that live in the Tongass.
