Animal activist and 1960's sex symbol
Brigitte Bardot has teamed up with none other than
Pamela Anderson, PETA's
honorary director, to campaign for the protection of baby seals.
Bardot gave Pam a letter to deliver to the Canadian ambassador to France
to request they take action against the seal hunting, and Pammy spoke to
reporters yesterday about the campaigns of both Brigitte Bardot and PETA
regarding baby seal hunting.
"It sickens me not just as a Canadian
but as a human being," Pam told reporters. "The hunt was dead for 20
years, and has been revived not to honor local customs or conserve cod
stocks but because new markets for fur have opened up in Russia and
China." According to the AntiFur Society, China is the number one exporter of fur
pelts for clothing worldwide.
Brigitte, now 73, with her
adorable accent, told Pammy via speakerphone, "You are my Valentine,
I kiss you."
Hundreds of thousands of baby harp seals are
bludgeoned to death for their fur every year in Canada, on Quebec's Lower
North Shore and in the waters East of Newfoundland (called "The
Front"). Directly from Fisheries and Oceans Canada: "A hakapik is an efficient tool designed to kill the
animal...sealers must strike the seal on the skull until it's crushed, and
administer a blinking eye reflex test or manually check the
skull."
The commercial hunting season in Canada is November 15th to
May 15th of each year; but most of this hunting takes place in March, so
the time to act is now! In 2006, one thousand more seals were killed
than the allowed quota; a total of 345,400 seals were
slaughtered.
Kim
Basinger, Sir Paul McCartney, Heather
Mills, Mick Jagger, Martin
Sheen, Pierce Brosnan, Paris
Hilton, Robert Kennedy, Jr., Linda
Blair, the Red Hot Chili Peppers,
Pink, Good Charlotte, and many
others have all publicly opposed the commercial seal hunting. Both
Brigitte Bardot and Pamela Anderson have attempted to schedule meetings
with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, which were rejected.
1. Sign PETA's petition to Prime Minister Stephen Harper
asking that he help end the seal slaughter in and around the
Arctic.
2. Copy and paste this graphic onto your online profile (MySpace,
Facebook, etc.) or website to help inform the masses of this cruel practice that
is still taking place every single year.
