Camelot and Broadway Star
Robert Goulet Dies of Rare Lung Disease
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Veteran singer / actor Robert Goulet,
Camelot and Broadway star, has died. He was 73. The Broadway
star passed away at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Tuesday
morning, after doctors failed to find a suitable donor transplant to
treat the lung disease, Interstitial Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Goulet was just diagnosed with the illness
in September (07), when he was taken to
a Las Vegas hospital after
feeling increasingly weak and suffering from shortage of breath.
He was transferred to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on October
13th to undergo an emergency lung transplant, after he had been
diagnosed with the rare disorder. The exact cause of the disease
is not known.
According to his wife, Vera, Goulet
remained in good spirits up until his
death, even joking with doctors
to "watch my vocal chords" before they inserted
a breathing
tube.
The star played his last performance in Syracuse, New York,
on September 20th, where he performed his one-man show A Man and His
Music, complete with a 15-piece orchestra.
Goulet is survived by his third wife, Vera,
and three children from his previous two marriages. You can read
all about his life, career, and music on wikipedia...his official website is down due to too many people trying to
access it at once.
Although a lot of his career was before my
time, I recognized Goulet instantly from a 1967 appearance on The
Lucy Show...he played both himself and his exact double, who gets
turned down for a loan by Mooney (Gale Gordon) and gets entered into a
Robert Goulet look-alike contest hosted by Lucy (Lucille Ball) to raise
money. He was one of those greats from that era.
So, in remembrance, here is actually the
entire episode that he appeared in. Feel like going back in
time? Complete with fast forward slider ;-) Hats
off!
