Wounded Warriors On The Road To Recovery
Thursday, November 6th, 2008 by Esmerelda

Army Lt. Melissa Stockwell became the first female amputee of the Global War on Terror three
weeks into her duty in Iraq. Melissa, who once broke the American 400 meter female freestyle record, knew she
wouldn't be herself again until she was able to resume participation in sports.
Just a few short months
after a bomb damaged her left leg she was skiing. Melissa also carried the flag in Beijing. as a Paralympic
athlete.
She appears on the cover of a new book, Returning Wars' Wounded, Injured and Ill: A
Handbook. It was edited by Nathan Ainspan and Walter Penk, both psychologists. The book was designed to
assist veterans in everything from recovering from injuries to finding jobs.
Proceeds from the first
year's sales are being donated to The Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project. To learn more about the book
