Yesterday on the
Rachael Ray show, there was a segment called "Human Lab" in which
three women tried three different methods to quit smoking.
24-year-old Monica used an "E-Z Quit" cigarette she said tasted like menthol
but had no nicotine, and didn't help her (but made her teeth sensitive and her
mouth numb). Christine, 35, used "Crave-RX" drops, "really really thick"
herbal remedy drops that reminded her of "bad house gin." April, 38, tried New
Life Laser therapy.
Conveniently, there was a didn't help, a helped a little, and a success: and
just as ironically, it matches right up with the prices.
E-Z quit cigarettes
are $14.95; Amazon has the list price for Crave-RX at $34.95. Laser therapy
is $399
and is NOT covered by health insurance. A low-level laser is used in the subject's ear to stimulate pressure points that some
believe (and when I say some believe, that does not yet include the FDA) increases
endorphins. You know what else increases endorphins? Alcohol, anabolic steroids, heroin,
morphine, cocaine, other drugs. But so does exercise, sex, and laughter. So if the
treatment really increases endorphins, and it's safe, screw using it for quitting smoking!
I want a home version for recreation!
Rachael says, "So the bottom line is, if one doesn't work for you, try something
else, 'cause whatever is gonna be your trigger is worth it in the long run."
The customary expert on set for the
talk show, WCBS medical correspondent Dr. Holly Phillips, replies: "Absolutely--try, try again. There's no hard and fast rule that if it takes you
3 times to quit smoking, 15 times...there are people who've tried hundreds of times
there's no hard and fast rule that the 101st time, you won't be a success."
Rachael: "Well, this won't certainly help you with your oral fixation: today's snack
of the day is chocolate!!" Nice segway.
Rachael Ray is bubbly and squeaky and likeable. But really, here's what I got
from this episode: the more you spend, and the longer you do it, the better, and
if that fails, eat chocolate. This sounds like the new plan to boost the economy. Companies
saw how much money diet products pull in...bring on the smoking bans and the wave of new
products to buy!
