Since When Are Wild Horses A Threat?
Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

We love horses, and this news is just unacceptable. There are about 33,000
wild horses living free in the Western United States. Because they access water and plant
life in about 10 states, the government has been trying to place many of them up for adoption.
But they haven't been able to place enough horses to their satisfaction, and last month the
U.S. Bureau of Land Management announced that euthanasia may be necessary to keep the population
down. There are currently around 30,000 horses in holding facilities waiting to be adopted.
While there are ranchers who support the government's efforts to round up mustangs - and there
are over 15,000 of the horses in Nevada alone - the Let 'Em
Run Foundation is reminding the BLM that there are other alternatives. Among them, birth
control, and tax breaks for landowners willing to let the horses roam their property.
"The American people have spoken," said Lacy Dalton, President and Co-Founder of Let 'Em
Run. "They want to preserve these wild horses. They are symbolic of the wildness and freedom
and independent spirit of the West. We need to find ways to save them without being a
burden on taxpayers."
