Wait...Maybe Obama Won't Fix This FISA Thing?

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

We published an article a couple of weeks ago about the FISA bill, and how Barack Obama may fix the provision that would grant immunity to telecoms like AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint - who are facing lawsuits by consumers who were wiretapped without warrants. However, the fact remains that Obama plans to vote in favor of the bill as is; which gives no guarantee that the immunity provision will be removed.

His support of the bill is receiving harsh criticism from Democrats. In February, though Obama didn't show up to vote for the FISA legislation presented at the time, Barack issued a statement saying "I am proud to stand with Senator Dodd, Senator Feingold and a grassroots movement of Americans who are refusing to let President Bush put protections for special interests ahead of our security and our liberty."

Then why vote for the bill as is? By the way, Senator Christopher Dodd is the one presenting housing legislation that threatens the privacy of Americans' electronic transactions, and Senator Russ Feingold is the co-author (alongside John McCain, of course) of the McCain-Feingold Act, aka the highly controversial Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act. We would not be proud to stand with either of those boys!

MSNBC's Keith Olbermann appealed to Barack Obama yesterday to change his mind:

"Buy yourself - and those who have most ardently supported you - something worth more than just class action suits against Verizon.

"Explain that you are standing aside on civil immunity, not just for political expediency, but for a greater and more tangible good - the holding to account of the most corrupt, the most dangerous, and the most anti-democracy presidential administration in our long history...Your duty is clear.

"Vote against the FISA bill, if it still carries that immunity."

You Know You Want It!

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Awesome news! We've put up some brand new apparel items in our shop, and they're all about our latest pet peeves! Men's and women's t-shirts, sweatshirts, and more are sporting some hot new slogans just for you, from ConnieTalk!

Along with all the other cool designs, we now have "IMPEACH," "Don't Blame Me, I Voted For Ron Paul," and "FISA: Free Immunity For Spying on Americans."

The FISA shirt is one of our new faves, since amendments to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act are the hot topic in politics and civil rights right now.

There are plenty of other slogans to choose from though, so make sure to stop by!

Rob Thomas Is A Successful Pothead

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

We l-o-v-e Rob Thomas, the frontman of one of our favorite bands, Matchbox 20. Today we learned an interesting fact about Rob: he's a fan of Mary Jane. Rob was at a party for The Wackness (which opens this week), and he said, "I'm a huge pothead, and I'm a big fan of legalization. In fact, all my stories usually start with, 'Okay, so I was really high..."

Well if you're a big pothead, you kind of have to be a fan of legalization, don't you? Although if you've seen our video on the subject, you'd know that 80% of American adults agree with Rob!

Thomas has also given a story to Pot Culture on marijuana: The truth is all kinds of people are stoners: lawyers, Fortune 500 businessmen, housewives, the fifty-something dude who lives next door and wears lemon sweaters and white shoes. But because of the stigma surrounding our favorite ritual, people have to keep it to themselves. This means if you want to search out the other heads in your surroundings, you have to become a pot-smoking Crime Dog McGruff.

And you could be fooled by this.

Rob is right: we've met people you would never, ever guess hit the happy pipe. Including Rob Thomas himself!: a 3-time Grammy award winner, in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, a husband and father, whose albums have gone 12x Platinum (Diamond!), 4x Platinum, 2x Platinum, and Gold.

For a picture of Rob holding a giant set of buds, click here (NSFW, obviously).
