U.S.
Congressman and Democratic lawmaker Pete Stark was pressured into
apologizing yesterday, after a comment he made during the debate over
Bush's SCHIP veto after pressure from both Republicans and Democrats in
the House of Representatives.
Because of what he said, there was a
resolution brought before the House of Reps to reprimand Rep.
Stark.
Among those whose feathers he
ruffled: Dem House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (who called his comment
"inappropriate"), House majority leader Steny Hoyer, House Republican
leader John Boehner.
The House vote, which rejected the
resolution to reprimand him, lost by just 23 votes. 196 voted to
pressure him for an apology and take formal action; 173 voted not
to. Great, so all of our politics are split right down the middle,
just like always.
By this time you're just dying to know what
he said, right? What would cause half of the House of
Representatives to want to force a fellow member to apologize to the
President of the United States?
Well, during the heated debate about
children's healthcare, Rep. Stark came to floor and said, "You don't
have the money to fund the war or children. But you're going to
spend it, and blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow
old enough for you to send to Iraq, to get their heads blown off, for
the president's amusement."
Yes, perhaps "amusement" was a misleading
word. "Greed" is more like it.
Alright, he said a little bit more than
just that - here is the video clip, watch away. I personally find
the lime green tie more offensive than the remarks.
He was giving his real opinion here.
That's what I think they find so faux paus about it. He is a
lawmaker and he is speaking what he believes to be the raw truth.
Politicians aren't supposed to do that anymore.
