Music Means Money...So Much for Starving Musicians!
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Mariah Carey's mother was a voice teacher, and significantly helped Mariah learn how to make the most of her pipes

Harris Interactive Poll has released a new survey showing that 88% of people with a post-graduate education were involved in a form of music learning while in school, and 83% of people earning $150,000 or more had a music education.

Hey, I have a music education!  Hel-LO?

"Part of it is the discipline itself in learning music, it's a rigorous discipline, and in an ensemble situation, there's a great deal of working with others.  Those types of skills stand you well in careers later in life," said John Mahlmann of the National Institute for Music Education in Virginia, which assisted in the survey.

"That's the beauty of music, that they can bring both hard work and enjoyment together, which doesn't always happen elsewhere," he added.

2,565 people took part in the survey, and those who found music to extremely fulfilling as a student were those who had either vocal lessons or who played in a garage band.

There is an entire website dedicated to independent garage bands trying to make it, at GarageBand.com

Rosie O'Donnell's "RB Kids," or Rosie's Broadway Kids foundation, is dedicated to enriching the lives of children through arts education, dance, music, drama, and theater.  Visit RosieBroadwayKids.org to read more about what you can do to help the less fortunate have the opportunity of music education!

Bomb Scare Causes 200 eBay Employees to Evacuate
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

This morning over 200 employees were evacuated from eBay's Hamilton Avenue location in San Jose, California, after a suspicious package was discovered that incited a bomb scare.

At 8:55 a.m., according to eBay, a package was found that could not be identified, and employees were asked to leave the building.  Someone in the mail room discovered the package and called in a police bomb squad disposal unit.

"The device was disrupted at about 12:30 p.m.," said Sgt. Nick Muyo of the San Jose PD.  "It was not an explosive device...This was simply a case of a package that nobody could identify.  So we handled this by the numbers."

"The affected areas of campus have since been reopened," eBay said in a statement.  "As before, our eBay, PayPal and Skype services remain unaffected."  As before?  Oh, lovely!

The incident eBay is referencing is Halloween night in 2006, when a pipe bomb shattered a building that is part of eBay's PayPal - 26 people were evacuated on that night and no one was injured.  The investigation was unfruitful, and no one was charged.

O.J. Simpson Officially Facing Charges Over Vegas Hotel Incident
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

O.J. selling his White Bronco last year

A justice of the peace ruled today the O.J. Simpson must face trial on kidnapping, armed robbery, and other charges related to the sports memorabilia incident that went down September 13th in a Las Vegas Hotel room.

"This is what we expected," Simpson told the Associated Press on his way out of the courtroom.  "If I have any disappointment, it's that I wish a jury was here.  As always, I rely on the jury system."

HE DID NOT JUST SAY THAT!  "As always?"  Does he thinks that's funny?

I don't know that I would consider that kidnapping, though.  I mean, really, I don't think they even roughed the guys up when O.J. and his crew payed that fateful visit to the sports memorabilia dealers...from the audio recording, it sounds like they just scared the shit out of them.

If convicted on kidnapping charges, O.J. could get prison time up to a life sentence with the possibility of parole; armed robbery charges would mandate at least some time in prison.

O.J. and co-defendants are scheduled to be arraigned November 28th.

Marie Osmond's Teen Son Checks into Rehab
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

This afternoon, Marie Osmond confirmed to CNN's Larry King that her 16-year-old son, Michael, has entered a rehabilitation facility.  The interview, which will air tonight on Larry King Live, does not disclose the reason for the rehab visit.

"My son Michael is an amazing young man, shown through his courage in facing his issues," Marie said in a statement.  "As his mother, I couldn't be more proud of him.  The press and public have always been kind and gracious in the past and I know they will continue to respect our privacy during this time."

We respect your privacy, Marie!  Marie has been having a very rough couple of weeks, with her father passing away last week in Utah after a dance on Dancing with the Stars that Marie dedicated just to him.  Marie's son Michael is one of eight children that Marie has with ex-husband Brian Blosil.

The Osmond family is very close-knit...they'll make it through!  Keep cheery Marie and her family in your thoughts and prayers, y'all.

"He's the most amazing kid...it's been a hard week," Marie told Larry.

Over You Lyrics

Love this song...just thought I'd share!

"Over You" by Chris Daughtry, from his self-titled album, "Daughtry."

Best part? "And I never thought I'd doubt you, I'm better off without you, more than you, more than you know."

Entertainment Tonight, who doesn't know when to leave a person alone, is breaking the news that Kanye West has cancelled his performance in the 2007 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, which is scheduled to tape tomorrow and will air on December 4th.

They don't cite a source, but ET is owned by CBS Studios, who is airing the Vickie's Secret Show, so 2+2...

Kanye West's mother, Donda West, passed away late Saturday from complications due to surgery, although the autopsy report is somewhat inconclusive and results will take 6-8 weeks.

Neon Green License Plates for Sex Offenders
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

It's been in discussions for months, and it's currently sitting in the Ohio Senate Judiciary Committee on Criminal Justice, with lawmakers unsure what to do with it.  It's a bill that would require sex offenders in the State of Ohio to have neon green license plates.

The name of the bill is Kristen's Law, named for a 14-year-old girl named Kristen Jackson who was lured from a fair in 2002 by a sex offender on parole.  She was murdered, and her body dismembered.

The bill is co-sponsored by Democratic State Representative Mike DeBose, and Republican State Senator Kevin Coughlin.

"It won't prevent every crime, Rep. DeBose has said.  "It's just a tool in the box, but cars are a weapon used by sexual predators.  They don't come to the bus stop and try and take kids in a sack."

But prosecutors, sheriffs, and police chiefs have openly opposed the law, saying that predators will find other ways, and instead of decreasing crime, it will cause vandalism and harassment, road rage and traffic hazards.

In Ohio, convicted DUI offenders already sport bright yellow plates.

What do you think?

Who would trust Danny Bonaduce as a LIFE COACH?
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

If this isn't the stupidest thing I've seen all day.

Danny Bonaduce, former child star with a temper problem (and quite a small weewee) is starring in a new program was launched by CBS Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint for braoadcast on mobile phones.  CBS and AT&T teaming up - how much more evil an you get?

Each episode shows Bonaduce giving advice to celebrities, with disastrous results - in his premier episode, "Britney Explained," Bonaduce goads viewers to believe that Britney's breakdown may be an elaborate scheme and clever career move.  Uh...no.

Twice weekly, Bonaduce will be giving life coach tips in his episodes.  Didn't he, like, just get divorced, throw Johnny Fairplay across a stage on live TV and get sued for it (not that Johnny didn't deserve it, I suppose), pose naked at an exhibitionist ball, among other recent strange appearances?

Just checking.

Freeze-dried grape powder...Who knew?
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Cancer researchers at the University of California say that freeze-dried grape powder in low doses stops genes linked to sporadic colorectal cancer.

I haven't the first clue where to get freeze-dried grape powder.  But the study also says that a diet rich in grapes may help prevent colon cancer, which is the third most common form of cancer and is the death of about 500,000 people worldwide (7% of Americans).

The study was a follow-up on previous studies that showed resveratrol, a nutrient suppliement derived from grape extract.  One study group was given 20 mg per day of resveratrol as a pill (okay, that's where you get it); the other group drank 120 g per day of grape powder mixed in water; the third group drank 80 g per day of the powder.

Although the supplements did not impact existing tumors, biopsied colon tissue (ew?) showed a significant reduction in Wnt, a "pathway" that has been linked to over 85% of sporadic colon cancers (the most common form).  More info on the study specifics here.

Eat your grapes!  They're so yummy this season, anyways...

I guess grape condoms don't count?

An Open Letter to the Climate Change Delegates Meeting in Bali

There are two aspects of a future international agreement on combating global warming that are dictated by fairness and necessity:
1.    One per capita carbon emission rate should be established for all nations.
On the one hand, every country should be held to the same standard.  On the other hand, past emissions should be forgiven.
2.    A countrys carbon emission should be the combination of the amount of carbon emitted minus the amount of carbon removed from the air.
There are various natural and technological methods of removing carbon from the air that should be encouraged.  A carbon market could be set up to facilitate distribution of emission credits and debits.
Currently, the international community is considering prescribing only drastic emission cuts to combat global warming.  This approach is unfeasible for many reasons:
1.    Emissions of greenhouse gases will rise over 50% by 2030 compared to current levels, assuming 1.8% annual rise based upon projected energy use and current efforts to mitigate emissions, according to the International Energy Agency in its annual report on global energy needs.
It is very unlikely that a rapidly growing population and economy will cut their emissions so drastically that either abrupt climate change or runaway global warming will be avoided.  Many countries missed their emission cut commitments under Kyoto, and the next round of cuts will have to be much more severe.

Howard K. Stern says he's broke
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

I was hoping Howard K. Stern would lay low, crawl back into the woodwork after the whole Geraldo at Large incident, which to me was a real reveal that Stern really did play a role in the demise of Anna Nicole Smith.

But this month he's decided to talk to Us Weekly magazine, and tell them - he's broke.

"I am in debt and basically broke," Stern, 38, told Us Weekly.  "There's this impression out there that I am somehow making money off of Anna's death.  It couldn't be further from the truth."

Yes, and I'm sure he didn't run and stash any of Anna's fortune, which he had full control over, in the Caymen Islands (somewhere near O.J.'s account, perhaps).

Us Weekly also says, "Stern has filed a $60 million libel suit against author Rita Cosby for alleging in a book that he engaged in homosexual acts with the father of Anna's baby Dannielynne, Larry Birkhead. But due to 'juggling' more than a dozen other lawsuits, Stern says he owes his parents 'hundreds of thousands of dollars.'"

I don't feel sorry for Howard at all.  Do you?

Wow! I have a DD-214 in my back pocket that shows I have nine years, ninths and six days of honorable service in Uncle Sam's Army. That stint included two trips to Nam and two Bronze Stars.

I was lucky enough to see Tet of 68 up close and personal. My second trip included about six weeks in Cambodia in April of '70. I know how to fly a helicopter, shoot a four deuce mortar and fix pretty much anything electronic. Not exactly an REMF, but I was there.

Now I realize that my anti-war views are not welcomed in some quarters, but don't diss me because I disagree with you.

There are a few facts that we should be able to agree upon:

1. Veterans are treated like shit by the Veterans Administration.
2. Veterans represent 25% of the homeless population of the United States, yet comprise only 11% of the adult population of this country.
3. The Veterans Administration is woefully under funded.
4. Jobs and Veterans are problematic.
5. PTSD and TBI are going to become epidemic as time passes.
6. Depleted uranium is going to dwarf Agent Orange in terms of scope and toxicity.

You will not shut us up. On Sunday the Veterans For Peace marched behind the American Legion's Veterans Day parade in Boston. About a block behind the parade. Led by five motorcycle Officers.

My pics of the day are somewhat spotty, as I was attending to business.

We assembled.
