Keith Olbermann, Michael Moore discuss health insurance
Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

Keith Olbermann talks about measure 50 that failed to pass in Oregon this week, which would have raised cigarette taxes from $1.18 to $2.03, and provide healthcare for 100,000 children of low-income families.  Measure 50, proposing an 84.5 cent tax increase per pack, was rejected by 60 percent of the state’s voters.

The states need to stop trying to pass these increases in cigarette taxes to attempt to pay for children's healthcare.  We need a nationwide answer to the health care problem in this country, not extra taxes tacked onto liquor or cigarettes.  The citizens of America are unhappy with the health care system, and a measure in Oregon that will save some children is not going to change that.

We need a new solution, in my humble opinion.

Here is the video clip of the Countdown with Keith Olbermann from last night's show, where Michael Moore appears to discuss the health care problems in America with Olbermann.

I usually agree with both of these guys, but in this case, not at all.  I'm not involved in the material production of cigarettes, Keith, but I don't think that the money for our health care system should be saddled on the backs of those who choose to smoke, no more than there should be a taxable admission fee for entering a bar that will go towards liver transplants.

The smoking population is going down, and as long as the taxes on cigarettes go up, and smoking bans continue to pass, the smoking population in America will continue to decline.  Therefore, it is a temporary solution, a Band-Aid, that will eventually fester.  Did I say fester?  Ew.

I still love both Keith Olbermann and Michael Moore, though.  Moore made me laugh with this one:  "I guess the Republicans have kind of figured out that, uh - their days are up, and uh, they might as well go out smoking, or something."

Madonna's message to you about Malawi
Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

Madonna posted this on her Raising Malawi website today:

From the moment I began my work on behalf of Malawi’s ONE MILLION orphans, people have asked, 'Why did you choose Malawi?'  I always answer, 'I didn’t.  Malawi chose me.'  Malawi is one of the most beautiful countries in the world.  Unfortunately, it is also one of the poorest - suffering from famine, drought, extreme poverty, and deadly diseases like HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis.  All of which could be treated with proper health care and education, if it were available.

Through the Raising Malawi: Orphan Care Initiative, Michel Berg and I have committed to doing all that we can to help this small country in desperate need.

We have met with world experts in healthcare, economics, education, and international development - leaders like Dr. Jeffrey Sachs and Dr. Paul Farmer, who have given a voice to the most underprivileged sectors of society.  Together we are working to raise the quality of life for a generation of orphaned and vulnerable children.

Photo:  STRINGER/AFP/Getty Images

Now I’m asking you to join us.

With one of the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the world and one of the lowest rankings in the Human Poverty Index, Malawi and her children are at the heart of the humanitarian crisis in sub-Saharan Africa.  The challenges facing these children are unimaginable.  Everyday in Malawi hundreds of children die from preventable illness, thousands are affected by abuse and neglect, and millions face a lonely struggle for survival without parents, or adult supervision.  At Raising Malawi, we believe in turning these challenges into stepping stones.

Malawi is country with incredible promise.  Malawians possess resiliency and great spirit.  If we give them a chance to achieve lasting sustainability through smart solutions and the proper support, we will in fact raise Malawi.  No matter who you are or where you are, you can join this cause and get involved.  Volunteers of all ages and from every corner of the world are needed.

Donations, no matter how large or small, can make a big difference: from buying a bed net to helping build a school or a clinic.  Every little bit helps.

I urge you to please support Raising Malawi and remember: by committing a little bit of your time, talent, or treasures to these extraordinary children, you will help to save a life.

Fearmongering Central:  Energy Drinks Amp Up Blood Pressure
Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

What a load of bull.  Get it?  Bull?  Red Bull?  Whatever, this just in from fearmongering media USA:  "Energy drinks boost blood pressure in even the young and healthy people and may leave hypertensive adults more charged up than they bargained for, researchers say."

From MedPage Today:

"Energy drinks typically contain high levels of caffeine and the amino acid taurine. These compounds have been shown in previous studies to have an impact on cardiac function and hemodynamic status, although the data available for caffeine are controversial, Dr. Kalus said.

The study included 15 healthy volunteers (53% women) with an average age of 25.9 who abstained from caffeine for two days before and during the study.

After participants' blood pressure and heart rate were measured and an electrocardiogram was taken at baseline, they drank two cans of an energy drink containing 80 mg caffeine and 1,000 mg taurine. The same tests were repeated at 30 minutes, and at one, two, three, and four hours after consumption while the volunteers sat around watching movies.

The men and women drank two cans a day for the following five days with another regimen of testing on the last day."

I've got to tell you, I don't like coffee, and those of you who know me know that I drink one can of Sugarfree Red Bull every morning instead.  I've been doing this for nearly five years.  A couple of weeks ago, I had my blood pressure checked at the Cleveland Clinic when I was there for an appointment, and the nurse said that my blood pressure was phenomenally good.

I'm also a smoker, though.

So then of course, based on the "mights" and "maybes" of this study, a million mass media outlets jump on the story.  I'm going to chalk this article up to one of the "You'll never look at your ______ the same again" BS stories.

UPDATE:  Nick Bollea aka Hogan arrested
Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

I can't help but think that all of you made a huge difference and helped justice be brought about in this case.  From our original article, many of you e-mailed us and let us know that you sent off e-mails to The Office of the State Attorney, Sixth Judicial Circuit of Florida, the Clearwater Police Department, the Clearwater Mayor and City Council, and the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of the State of Florida.

Indeed, Nick Bollea aka Hogan was under the influence of alcohol the night of the August 26th crash that left Marine John Graziano in a comatose state.  He was also, as we stated, illegally streetracing.

This morning, we received the following e-mail from the Clearwater Police Department, informing us that Nicholas Bollea turned himself in and is being booked in the Pinellas County Jail:

"Date: Wed Nov 07, 2007 09:48:50

From: City of Clearwater - Public Safety

What: Nicholas Bollea Arrested for Reckless Driving Involving Serious Bodily Injury; Second Driver Given Court Summons for Reckless Driving

Who: Vehicle 1: 1998 Toyota Supra

Style: Hatchback

Color: Yellow

Driver 1: Nicholas Bollea

W/M DOB 07/27/90

Passenger 1: John Graziano III

W/M DOB 01/04/85

Vehicle 2: 2003 Dodge Viper

Style: Convertible

Color: Silver

Driver 2: Daniel Jacobs

W/M DOB 06/01/85

Passenger 2: Barrett Lawrance

W/M DOB 03/25/80

What: Nicholas Bollea (Driver 1) was arrested this morning on a warrant for Reckless Driving Involving Serious Bodily Injury resulting from an August 26, 2007 wreck which seriously injured his passenger, John Graziano III. Daniel Jacobs (Driver 2) is being issued a summons to appear in court for Reckless Driving.

When: 11/07/2007

9:48 a.m. (arrest time)

Where: Nicholas Bollea turned himself in to Clearwater Police at 14450 46th Street North. He is been transported by Clearwater Police to the Pinellas County Jail where he is currently being booked.

How/Why: The Clearwater Police Department has completed an extensive investigation into the causes of an August 26, 2007 wreck involving Nicholas Bollea and his passenger John Graziano III. The investigation, conducted by a team of four (4) specially trained police investigators, working in conjunction with the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office, involved the critical examination of substantial physical evidence and the interviews of numerous witnesses. Based on the evidence and witness testimony, investigators have concluded that Bollea was operating his vehicle recklessly at the time of the crash and caused serious bodily injury to Graziano.

This morning a warrant was issued for Bollea's arrest per Florida Statute 316.192 (3)(c) 2 (Reckless Driving Involving Serious Bodily Injury). Bollea turned himself in to Clearwater Police. He has been transported and is currently being booked into the Pinellas County Jail. Reckless Driving Involving Serious Bodily Injury is a third-degree felony. Bollea was also cited for:

-Use of a motor vehicle in the commission of a felony;

-A person under the age of 21 operating a vehicle with a breath-alcohol level of .02 or higher;

-Illegal window tint

Investigators interviewed several witnesses who stated they saw Bollea (Driver 1) and Daniel Jacobs (Driver 2) racing, before Bollea lost control of the his vehicle and crashed into a tree. The vehicle came to rest in the median of Court Street, east of South Missouri Ave at 7:31 p.m. on August 26, 2007. Investigators have determined Bollea was driving in excess of 60 miles per hour close to or at the time of the crash. The posted speed limit in that area is 40 miles per hour. The road was also wet due to a recent rain shower.

Investigators have concluded that although Vehicle 1 and Vehicle 2 were racing, Jacobs (Driver 2) was not a direct cause in the crash. Jacobs is being issued a summons to appear in court for Reckless Driving."

Thank you to everyone who took action in the name of justice.

Dog thought he was black...and found out he is so not
Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

Regarding his recent controversy in the press over racial remarks made in a phone conversation with his son, Duane "Dog" Chapman told FOX's Hannity & Colmes that he felt a connection to black people and thought he was allowed to say the word.

"There's a special connection that I thought I had between me and black America," the emotional Dog the Bounty Hunter star told Fox's Hannity & Colmes. "And I used to say, 'I'm black, too."

"In other words, my whole life I've been called a half-breed, a convict, king of the trailer trash, this and that so when I stood there and said, 'I kind of know what you feel like, because I've been there, too,' that I felt that I could embrace and like, as brothers say the word."

"I now learned I'm not black at all, and I never did it out of hate," Chapman continued. "This sounds so stupid. I always did it out of love. Other white guys would be like, 'Boy, who does Dog think he is? Dog can say that.' And black guys would be with me and walk with me and respect me."

"So, I went too far with that."

Yeah, a little too far with that, Duane.

Gawd, why does everybody go to Faux FOX News?  Now I'm starting to think Dog really is dumb!

Anyway, here's the video clip of the Dog's interview:

Editorial:  Why I'm leaning towards Ron Paul in 2008
Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

I usually vote Democratic.  Although I weigh all of the candidates carefully, and wish the public would support more than just the two main parties so heavily, the most likely and agreeable candidates in my mind often end up happening to be Democrats.

I think that next year, this may not be the case.

Yesterday, Ron Paul's campaign raised over $4.07 million dollars - in one day.  This is more than the campaign has raised in this entire last quarter.  The money came from a website called ThisNovember5th.com, which commemorates a thwarted bombing that occurred centuries ago.

On November 5, 1605, a Roman Catholic "rebel" attempted to assassinate King James I by blowing up the Parliament.  This is the video that is currently on the homepage of ThisNovember5th's site:

One of my favorite things that Ron Paul says in this video - although the whole thing gave me goosebumps:

"We have a lot of goodness in this country, and we should promote it.  But never through the barrel of a gun.  We should do it by setting good standards, motivating people, and have them want to emulate us.  But you can't enforce our goodness, like the NeoCons preach, with an armed force.  It doesn't work.  Woodrow Wilson was telling us about that, in promoting democracy, a long time ago.  It doesn't work, and we have to admit it."

1. He has never voted to raise taxes.

2. He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.

3. He voted against the Patriot Act.

4. He voted against the Iraq War.

5. He never votes for legislation unless the proposed measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution.

6. He is campaigning to stop federal agencies and special interests from driving property owners from their homes.

7. He believes that imposing tax on Social Security benefits is unfair and illogical.

8. He believes that it is unconstitutional to pay taxes on our income, that our forefathers never intended private citizens' income to be taxable, and seeks to completely eliminate the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

9. He has a six-point plan for border security and immigration reform, although he believes we make illegal immigrants the scapegoat through a system we've designed to be incoherent and unjust.

10. He acknowledges that "the biggest threat to our privacy is the government."

American Citizens Want Dick Cheney Impeached More Than Nixon
Monday, November 5th, 2007

The mass media is awful about broadcasting matters of presidential accountability - when it came to the Democratic debate last week, NBC anchors Brian Williams and Tim Russert were more interested in asking follow-up cquestions about UFO's and Barack Obama's Halloween costume than following up on Dennis Kucinich's strong statements demanding the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney.

Which is typical:  you don't see the impeachment issue included in very many statewide polls or national surveys.

Nonetheless, when you ask the citizens of the U.S. what they think about holding the Bush administration accountable for their actions, they are more enthusiastic about impeaching Dick Cheney than people were during the height of the Watergate scandal during the Nixon administration, despite the lack of media coverage.

Congressman Kucinich is facing a rough battle with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who still says that impeachment is "off the table."

Drew Carey Defends Use of Medical Marijuana
Monday, November 5th, 2007

He's from Cleveland...he's hilarious...and he wants to help sick people that need medical marijuana.  Could we love Drew Carey any more?

Comedian, TV Host, and Actor Drew Carey took a stand for cannabis on Thursday, posting a video online at Reason.tv defending the use of medicinal marijuana.

"Smell that smell," the 49-year-old comedian says as he walks into a Los Angeles medical marijuana dispensary. "That's the smell of freedom."

Drew Carey is the new host of "Price is Right."  Although the show will continue to close their daily episodes with Bob Barker's traditional spay-and-neuter refrain, Carey will continue posting mini-documentaries every two weeks through the end of the year on Reason.tv, and topics will include eminent domain, school choice, and immigration.

"I think it's clear by now that the federal government needs to reclassify marijuana.  People who need it should be able to get it - safely and easily," Carey says.  The video examines patients who need and use medical marijuana in California, and how the federal government is "making their lives even worse."

Amen!  We posted a video about this exact same thing, which you can view here, and we also have a petition for the cause here that you can sign.

Here's Drew Carey's documentary video for your viewing pleasure:

Christina Aguilera Confirms Pregnancy, Due Early Next Year
Monday, November 5th, 2007

You see, Christina Aguilera must have went and read our article that contained a mini-rant about entertainers who hide their pregnancies.

She finally publicly revealed her pregnancy.  In an interview with Glamour magazine, she revealed that she'll "enter into mommyhood" at the beginning of next year.  She also says that we wants to continue to work after the birth and find a balance between raising a child and having a career.

Saying hubby Jordan Bratman is "thrilled" about becoming a father, she added, "He's so supportive and amazing through everything.  He came with me on the last leg of the tour and he was my support system...I gush.  I'm a lucky girl."

Check out this maternity look...so Gwen Stefani!
