From us to you...we hope that you have a happy and safe Halloween!

Watch this video, and something cool will happen...I promise!  Our Halloween gift to you.  Unless you're using a non-Internet Explorer browser, in which case, it won't work, but the video is still good!

  1. Princess
  2. Pirate
  3. Witch
  4. Spider-Man
  5. Superman
  6. Disney Princess (Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc.)
  7. Power Ranger (still?)

  10. Vampire

They also have the Top 100 Costume Ideas (which get a lot more original than the ones above, for us adults), arranged by category here.  So, if you haven't made up your mind yet, now is your chance to get inspired!

Spears' Confessional Controversy:  Blackout Album Offends the Church
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

The CD booklet for Britney Spears' Blackout album

It appears that faith is just a joke to Britney Spears.  She was raised Southern Baptist, and after picking up and then abandoning other religions - including Kabbalahism and Buddhism - she most recently consulted a Christian life coach earlier in the year (whom I doubt she's still seeing, considering).

Now Britney, who was once famous for citing her religious beliefs as a reason to save her virginity until marriage, has caused outrage within the Catholic community after posing for racy photos for the "artwork" on her latest album.  I use the term "artwork" loosely - anything that delivers a shocking message with no purpose or meaning lacks art to me.

So, clad in fishnets, Spears poses seductively in the lap of a handsome young priest, with the shots appearing in her album.  Catholic leaders have branded the images a "bottom of the barrel stunt."

Bill Donohue, president of the New York-based Catholic League, tells the New
York Daily News, "This is all the puzzle pieces coming together. This girl is
crashing. She's not even allowed to bring up her own kids because she's not
responsible enough. Now we see she can't even entertain."

Kiera McCaffrey, the League's Director of Communications, told MTV News yesterday that the photos are a "cheap publicity stunt that is a way to get people to talk about [her] album without talking about her music, which is what they should be focusing on...She should be focusing on singing and dancing and trying to be an entertainer without mocking a Catholic sacrament."  Amen!

At the time we posted this, a poll on EntertainmentWise.com, 71% of the people that saw the pics found the photo shoot offensive.

See, I try to keep away from writing Britney Spears stuff, because I try not to rubberneck when I pass by a total collision.  Despite how frequently Britney custody stories and whatnot flood the press, I pass on them.

But then girlfriend has to go and piss me off all the time.  Yes, count me in on the 71%...I'm officially offended.  Some of us take religion seriously, and while we support freedom of expression, there is a different between artistic expression and religious persecution.

If people are going pelt bagels at Ann Coulter for talking about the differences between Jewish and Christian faiths...well, the pop wreck shouldn't invoke any less anger over her recent nose-thumbing of Catholicism.

Gwen Stefani donates concert profits to California fire victims
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Gwen Stefani is donating the proceeds from yesterday's San Diego, California show to the victims of the wildfires that have been affecting California residents for the past week.  Stefani gave the profits from the concert to the San Diego Foundation to support fire relief efforts.

"When I heard about the devastation of the fires, at first I felt I should cancel my show out of respect," Stefani said in a radio interview.  "But then it occurred to me that there might be a more useful solution."

Awwww!  What a doll!

This is the last week of Gwen's Sweet Escape world tour.

Not only have the wildfires been devastating California, but a moderate earthquake (magnitude 5.6) just struck last night, about 9 miles from San Jose, California, Silicon Valley's biggest city, causing at least minor damage.

Bake from scratch last-minute:  Quick & easy Halloween cookies
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Need Halloween treats that will be ready in a snap?  Well, you can either run to the local bakery for a Halloween cookie bouquet, or you can make four dozen Halloween cookies from scratch in just 25 minutes!

With a prep time of 15 minutes and a baking time of 10 minutes, these quick and easy Halloween cookies are ready in just 25 minutes.  Care of AllRecipes.com, my absolute fave recipe site!

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and place onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  3. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let stand on cookie sheet two minutes before removing to cool on wire racks.

Camelot and Broadway Star Robert Goulet Dies of Rare Lung Disease
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Veteran singer / actor Robert Goulet, Camelot and Broadway star, has died. He was 73.  The Broadway star passed away at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Tuesday morning, after doctors failed to find a suitable donor transplant to treat the lung disease, Interstitial Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Goulet was just diagnosed with the illness in September (07), when he was taken to
a Las Vegas hospital after feeling increasingly weak and suffering from shortage of breath.  He was transferred to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on October 13th to undergo an emergency lung transplant, after he had been diagnosed with the rare disorder.  The exact cause of the disease is not known.

According to his wife, Vera, Goulet remained in good spirits up until his
death, even joking with doctors to "watch my vocal chords" before they inserted
a breathing tube.

The star played his last performance in Syracuse, New York, on September 20th, where he performed his one-man show A Man and His Music, complete with a 15-piece orchestra.

Goulet is survived by his third wife, Vera, and three children from his previous two marriages.  You can read all about his life, career, and music on wikipedia...his official website is down due to too many people trying to access it at once.

Although a lot of his career was before my time, I recognized Goulet instantly from a 1967 appearance on The Lucy Show...he played both himself and his exact double, who gets turned down for a loan by Mooney (Gale Gordon) and gets entered into a Robert Goulet look-alike contest hosted by Lucy (Lucille Ball) to raise money.  He was one of those greats from that era.

So, in remembrance, here is actually the entire episode that he appeared in.  Feel like going back in time?  Complete with fast forward slider ;-)  Hats off!

Wrapping up last night's Democratic debate
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Hillary Clinton, who has called for an end to the raids of legal medical marijuana dispensaries throughout America, raised her hand at the Democratic Presidential Debate last night, when the MSNBC host asked if any of the Democratic candidates supported the decriminalization of cannabis.

Girlfriend was on fire tonight over the Bush administration, as well.  She attacked Bush 11 times and Cheney twice during the debate, and also criticized the GOP more than any other candidate up there.

Sometimes, her answers seemed evasive, though, and she got dodgy when it came to questions about whether or not illegal immigrants should be legally able to have drivers' licenses in California.

I have to say, MSNBC covered way too many stupid questions, though.  Who fielded the answers chosen?  They asked more about UFO's than any other topic, it seemed.  Trying to set a Halloween mood, I guess, but it was stupid.

The most interesting part of the whole debate was when a guy in the audience ran up between the two announcers holding an antiwar sign and screamed at the camera, "Get the troops out of Iraq now, no more blood for oil!"  And the fact that everyone in the background after the debate was holding up Ron Paul 2008 signs.

So, the biggest losers of the night?  MSNBC.  We all love Halloween, but we don't tune into the presidential debate for questions about aliens and Halloween masks - some of us are very worried about the future leadership of our country, thank you!

Shitteous, shitteous, shitteous media!  Dennis Kucinich, in my opinion, gave the most straight-forward, honest answers.  He speaks no-holds-barred , at least.  He got firm about how we should pull out of Iraq now, and immediately impeach Bush & Cheney, instead of just slinging mud their way.

Whether or not he's right, he acts the most like he believes he knows what needs to be done, while the others sort of pooh-poohed their way through the thing:  Barack Obama joking that he's going to look for a Mitt Romney Halloween mask, acting rather aloof, and Hillary very much holding back.

International Day of Protest Against the Use of Fur
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Fur coats...scarier than Halloween.

The Anti-Fur Society of Washington D.C., as part of the International Anti-Fur Coalition in over 40 countries worldwide, will be holding a peaceful protest march in downtown D.C. this weekend; groups will be gathering worldwide for the International Day of Protest Against the Use of Fur, this Saturday, November 3rd.

China has been a large focus amongst antifur groups recently, as the country is the world's largest exporter of fur.  Animals endure horrific brutalities there due to the lake of animal welfare and protection standards.  It is estimated that China produces more than 1.5 million fox pelts per year, about the same number of raccoon dog pelts - the kind that Diddy's clothing line was busted for using in December.

Fur collars marked "faux" fur on Sean John coats were revealed by the Humane Society to contain real fur from dogs:  raccoon dogs are a breed of dog, not raccoon.  Diddy had them all pulled from the line after it was revealed that real dogs were being killed for the coats.

Previous tests conducted by the Humane society on fur trim from other designers has the same conclusion:  fur from the raccoon dog is being mislabeled in China as being from a raccoon, and then further mistranslated as being fake fur.

"Dog and cat fur has largely been found in the U.S. because of a loophole in the importation of fur into the U.S. which allows any fur item under $150 to enter our markets without labeling," says Rosa Close of the Anti-Fur Society.  "Since most dog/cat fur items are priced below $150, and sold under false names, it is impossible to know what consumers are buying unless DNA tests are performed."

And the tests, she says, start at $500 each.

Animal lovers will be meeting the Anti-Fur Society at Connecticut Avenue & K Street NW in downtown Washington, D.C. with posters and signs beginning at 12:00 pm.  They will protest at Burberry for 1/2 hour, then move on to Dupont Circle where the march will end at 1:30 pm.

1.  This weekend:  For the most up-to-date list of scheduled demonstrations worldwide for this Saturday, Nov 3rd., please visit antifurcoalition.org .

2.  Staying informed:  visit the antifursociety.org (one of our good friends!) for more information on helping fur bearing animals worldwide.

3.  Show your support from petitions to cute antifur graphics here.  You can also view there which celebrities to write on your sign, who still promote and finance the fur trade.  Write them on your signs this weekend!

Mario Lopez's barely-there Halloween costume
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

I cannot resist posting this, because it is Halloween, and I was waiting for the next crazy celebrity Halloween costume.

Mario Lopez at the Playboy Mansion dresses like...something, I have no idea what - Sparticus?  A Greek god?  Yeah, yeah, Mario, we already saw your butt on Nip/Tuck, move along.

It's a little bit too beefy, isn't it?  Ease up on the clenches, Mario!

Do not forget to watch Rosie on Martha Stewart's Halloween Special!
Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

We already mentioned this in our forum, but it's worth mentioning twice!  Especially since my sister just reminded me that Martha Stewart really does have some mindblowing ideas in the crafts department:  like why not just cut the hole in the bottom of the pumpkin instead of the top, to avoid burning your fingers when trying to put the candle in the pumpkin.

It kind of makes you wonder - why wasn't it always done that way?

Anyhow, Rosie O'Donnell dressed up like Queen Elizabeth for The Martha Stewart Halloween Special that is on today, so be sure to watch!  They'll be doing trick-or-treating stuff, crafting, cooking, costumes, and learning how to make candy wrapper decoupage out of used candy wrappers.  Recycling, I love it!

Plus, lots of yummy Halloween things like Martha's Deviled Food Cake, angel biscuits...my mouth is watering already.  It's amazing how Martha can do that to you:  make you completely forget she's an ex-con and make you feel like you're at home in Mom's kitchen.

Added bonus about today's show: rbkids will be performing for the first time, singing and dancing their little hearts out!! RBK is Rosie's Broadway Kids organization to help teach children arts education through dance, music, and drama, who might otherwise not have the opportunity.  So check it out and come back to discuss it!
