Oprah apologizes to parents
at South African girls' school
A member of the staff was removed from Oprah's $46 million Johannesburg school by child protection officers this month after claims of misconduct. It is being investigated by South African police and U.S. investigators. "I've disappointed you. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry," Winfrey told families that showed up for an emergency meeting at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls.
It's also been reported that O gave the students her personal phone number and e-mail address in the U.S. if they ever needed to get in touch with her. Oprah fulfilled a promise that she
made to former President Nelson Mandela years ago when she opened the
academy last year: she gave more than 150 poor South African girls
a chance. |

Haven't figured out
your Halloween costume yet?
Not sure what you're costume's going to be yet? Have no ideas last minute? Like online quizzes? Let the internet pick your Halloween costume for you! We took the quiz above at blogthings.com, and they think our costume should be Catwoman. Let's see what others say... iVillage's "Which Costume are you?" quiz is a little longer, 11 questions long, and doesn't show fun pictures, but does give you quite a few good ideas, separating male, female, and couples costumes. Here were our results: For Women:
And then our favorite Halloween costume quiz was at halloween.fandango.com. It's cute, fun, and it agrees with blogthings...we got the Catwoman result again!: Yeah, I'm not going to be Catwoman this year, but I still enjoyed taking the quizzes and got some good ideas. |

Oasis singer may still be seeing John Lennon's ghost
Last year, Gallagher first said he saw the ghost of his idol, John Lennon. "I was in Manchester at a mate's house having a sleep. I remember getting up and feeling really weird. I turned round and there I was, lying on the bed, and I sort of fell back into my body. There was a presence there, and it was him, Lennon." Were there shrooms at this mate's house? Liam is not the only one who has made these claims. Paul McCartney was convinced that Lennon haunted the recording of the 1995 Beatles single "Free As a Bird," in the form of a white peacock. Now, the UK's Daily Star - which, take this with a grain of salt, I guess - is claiming Liam is still "scared stiff," and a source just told them:
“He lies awake listening with the lights
on. And he is adamant he hears footsteps going up and down the
stairs.
“It’s been happening for some time now and
he sometimes wakes up and feels as though he is being watched by someone
from another walk of life. He also feels a cold air pass over him when he
hears the sounds of the footsteps – usually between 4 and
5am.
“If he had his way, he’d call in the
experts to investigate the sounds further. But Nicole reassures him it’s
all ok.”
Don't they totally look alike?

Bad news for Craigslist: Woman answers ad, found
dead
Those of us who are internet addicts know what Craigslist is. Craigslist.org is a popular internet classifieds bulletin board founded by Jim Buckmaster in 2000. It ranks quite well on Google, so people use it to post classifieds for everything from apartments for rent to job postings, personals, and for sale items. Police are saying that a Cottage Grove, Minnesota woman's response to an ad seeking a nanny on Craig's List may have been bait for a killer. Katherine Ann Olson, only 24 years old, was found dead in the trunk of her car late Friday night. She was last seen by her friends the day before - Thursday morning - when she went to meet someone in Savage about the nanny job posting, hoping to apply. The man whom police believe placed the ad is a 19-year-old from Savage, and he's currently being held in the Scott County jail pending charges. Police arrested him at his job at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Friday night. "We're confident we have the suspect in custody," Police Capt. David Muelken said. Katherine had taken nanny jobs at least twice in the past, including one in Turkey, by answering online ads. Her family said that they were worried about her responding to job postings online, but that she never seemed to worry about it. Though the suspect is still in custody, charges won't be filed by the Scott County attorney's office until tomorrow morning. Charges were expected today, but Lori Lambrecht, manager of the Scott County attorney's office, said the office received an extension on filing charges, and will file them by noon on Tuesday. There have been horror stories like this about MySpace and Craig's List before...everyone ought to be very careful when responding to classified postings over the internet! A good tip from an internet safety page: "Be careful meeting

FEMA
PR Chief loses his job
after fake news conference
John P. "Pat" Philbin, the man who oversaw public affairs at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) when the fake news conference was held last week has lost his new job. He will no longer be taking over as head of public relations for the director of national intelligence. He's the External Affairs Director and was slotted to become director of public affairs for National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell today. But it's a no-go. It has not been released yet whether or not he has resigned or was fired from the new position. Mike McConnell's office issued the following statement confirming this today: "We do not normally comment on personnel matters. However, we can confirm that Mr. Philbin is not, nor is he scheduled to be, the director of public affairs for the office of the director of national intelligence." The Director of FEMA, David Paulison, is claiming that Philbin sent him an e-mail taking full responsibility for last week's staged news conference. Pat Philbin's bio page is suddenly now missing from FEMA's website, and he's missing from the list of FEMA leaders completely.
When things like this happen, don't you just assume that they're making one person the scapegoat, like CBS did to Dan Rather? When there's a phony news conference by the FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY, we expect more than one head to roll! Something is seriously messed up here. I highly doubt that the fake press thing was all the brainchild of one man, Pat Philbin. I demand an independent investigation!

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Pot's a leaf, not a drug One of the things I like about Arnold Schwarzenegger - and spelling his last name when I type this isn't it - is this picture:
That's right: it's a young Arnold holding a joint, wearing a t-shirt that says "Arnold is Numero Uno." Okay, the t-shirt, not so much. But the marijuana cigarette and the look on his face: priceless.
That being said, Arnold has the same opinion I do about marijuana: as we often say, it's not a drug, it's a plant. Well, Arnold went and told this month's GQ Magazine that he's never done drugs. Since some say the two statements contradict each other, he clarified: "That is not a drug. It's a leaf," he said to interviewer Piers Morgan. "My drug was pumping iron, trust me." He then said that other politicians' personal lives - even if it involves drugs - is none of his concern. "What would you rather have? A politician taking stuff and not saying, but making the best decisions and improving things?" he asked. "Or a politician who names all the drugs he or she has taken but makes lousy decisions for the country?" "A politician's job is to do what's best for the people and to improve the country, the economy, the environment. Why should I care if a politician takes sleeping pills every night so long as he can do his job?" When asked about his thoughts on President George W. Bush, Arnold was dodgy. "I would say that I was...very fond of his father. I worked for President Bush Sr., and he was a great man. I think his son does some great things and there are other things I don't agree with." Hey, what does he mean by President Bush Sr. "was" a good man? Was that a grammatical slip? |

The
state of Indiana
sues fax spammers, and so can you
There is one type of spammer that I hate more than all of the rest: fax spammers. Fax spammers are to me, the worst kind, because if you receive e-mail spam, you can usually just delete it, no harm done (assuming there's no virus or adware involved). But fax spammers: they not only waste your time, they waste your paper and your ink. Now that is bullshit. The state of Indiana has filed lawsuits against eight companies that it says flooded Hoosiers with illegal fax advertisements for the typical fax spam garbage: vacations, weight loss products, loans, and insurance. I'd be surprised if there weren't some "micro stock" ads in there, too. Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter announced the suits during a visit to Louisville today. Five other companies have been cited for violating the do-not-fax law and paid penalties of over $13,000. GOOD! "These fax offers are frustrating for business owners who bear the brunt of the costs, along with the time to sort through the unwanted piles of paper each day," Carter said in a statement. "Home-based businesses also have the added frustration of uninterrupted privacy during the owners' time spent with family." Suits were filed against Heritage Biographical Publications Inc., Cancun Adventures Inc., International Directories Corp. of Florida, Slim America Labs, The Hot Lead Company, Worldwide Commercial Lending, and Sunstar Travel and Tours Inc. & Tropical Travel Marking Inc. I get so enraged by fax spam, that at nearly every company I've worked for I took it upon myself to collect the faxes and report every single one to the FCC. They never stopped, and the fax spammers omit the required opt-out phone numbers or use them to verify that you're really getting the faxes, so that they can send more. Blech. Why can't those companies just be put out of business? It is illegal, people! And the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is supposed to be enforcing anti-fax laws! WTF? They're probably too busy with censorship in the media.
2. When in anger: file a complaint!! The FCC is supposed to be there to handle the public's concerns about telemarketing, junk faxes, e-mail message spam, and even text messaging spam! But if no one reports it - what can be done? It's literally up to us...just, nobody ever tells us that. Comments > > |
