Rosie O'Donnell disputes ratings increase in The View
Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Rosie O'Donnell has taken to her online blog to dispute the validity of internet blogger Perez Hilton's claim that daytime TV show The View is doing "better than ever" this season.  She posted on Rosie.com today:

While im all about creative use of ratings, I think we need to do something with the lovely people at the view insisting that the ratings are up without rosie when in fact they are not. Please check out perez hilton from yesterday stating their ratings are up +16% versus YAG.

Here is the real data based on live plus same day viewing:

P2+ 3,576 + 7.8%
HH 2.8 rating versus 2.66 YAG + 5.3%
W [ages] 18- 49 1.47 versus 1.6 YAG - 8.8%
W [ages] 25-54 1.77 versus 1.92 YAG - 8.5%
W [ages] 18-34 1.03 versus 1.23 YAG - 19.4%
W [ages] 50+ 2.3 versus 2.13 YAG + 8.0 %

Note that the show is bought from an advertising perspective which is their only revenue stream on either the W 18-49 or 25-54 demo meaning they are LOSING revenue versus YAG. Also, the most valuable demo is the younger one 18-34 which is really hemmoraging. They are picking up older viewers 50+ which are of less value to advertisers.

Again - they should really use the ACTUAL REAL numbers in their press statements and if they don’t, then maybe we should…..

TRUTH IN ADVERTISING BABY!!!"

Eh, The View is not hurting with witty Whoopi Goldberg, and neither is Rosie.  She's appearing in upcoming episodes of Nip/Tuck, has requests to appear on Oprah and Diane Sawyer (although she's declining them), and she has a book coming out, Celebrity Detox, on October 2nd.

Die Hard producer John McTiernan sentenced to federal prison
Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Anthony Pellicano, the accused wiretapper

John McTiernan (above left), the director of "Die Hard," was sentenced yesterday to four months in prison by a federal judge for lying to an F.B.I. agent.  It's just like a Hollywood action movie, except without the hot male lead.  McTiernan, 56, was asked by a Fed in February of 2006 whether or not he hired private investigator Anthony Pellicano - who is awaiting trial for a wiretapping conspiracy on behalf of celebs and studio execs.  Prosecutors in McTiernan's case said he paid Pellicano $50,000 to wiretap Charles Rowen, the producer of "Rollerball," a flick that tanked at the box office.  McTiernan denied it, but two months later pleaded guilty to a false-statement charge.  And then withdrew that plea.

Dale S. Fischer, the federal district judge that sentenced McTiernan yesterday, was having none of that.  She (yes, Dale is a "she") was ticked at McTiernan for considering himself "above the law."

"If anything, Mr. McTiernan's priveleged background is an aggravating factor," she said, and tacked a $100,000 fine on top of the four month prison sentence.  He was also required to surrender his passport.  McTiernan has until January 15th to turn himself in; his attorney said they will be filing an appeal.

Assistant U.S. attorney Daniel Saunders expressed his belief that McTiernan has hired Pellicano to wiretap others, and most likely had the surveillance done on his ex-wife, Donna Dubrow, during their divorce in 1997.

A real-life wiretapping conspiracy.  Are these guys friends with Bush?

Sharon Osbourne vs. Courtney Love
Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

There's a battle brewin' between Sharon Osbourne and Courtney Love, all over little Jack Osbourne.

Sharon says:  "She was the first person to give my son Jack the prescription drug OxyContin.  I'm appalled that an adult would give that to a 15-year old boy."

Courtney says:  "I never did that.  I would never give drugs to a teenager.  F*ck you, Sharon!  As if I would ever give drugs to a teenager."

Eh, it's hard to tell who's right here.  Would Courtney have remembered giving drugs to a brick wall back then?  Probably not.  Does Sharon know for a fact that Courtney did that?  Probably not.  Can't you just imagine Jack:  It wasn't my fault, Mom, Courtney Love gave it to me!  I look up to her!  Okay, okay, I knew you wouldn't buy that second part.  But the first part is true.

Hmm.  We think Sharon and Courtney are a lot alike.  Check out this comparison  (warning: not safe for kiddies).

Donald Trump says Bush should go into hiding
Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

No kidding.  Donald Trump said in an interview this week that Bush is the worst President ever, and that he ought to go into hiding when his term is over.

It is not the first time Trump has slammed Bush.  In March, he told CNN the same thing:  that Bush is the worst President in history, and later asked Bush to get us out of Iraq , citing it as a "total catastrophe."  But this time, he was arguably more bitter than ever regarding Bush's affect on the state of our country.

"I think President Bush has to go into a corner and hide if a Republican is going to get elected," he said.  "There is no way he is an asset.  He is a huge liability."

He essentially blamed Bush for the downslide of America's economy, saying that other countries economies are now getting the attention, and with the war in Iraq, "America's come down a long way."  He added, "it's very, very sad."

Hey, he and Rosie O'Donnell agree on this - what's the beef?

STRIKE!  General Motors factory employees walk out of GM
Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

It really went down!  General Motors failed to reach a new labor agreement with the United Auto Workers union, and at 11:00 a.m. EST yesterday, the UAW started their first nationwide strike in 37 years.  We told you yesterday that they'd posted an official strike notice on their website, and they're making good on their word.  73,000 workers walked off of the job yesterday morning, in 30 states, and picked up a picket sign.

Their union contract expired ten days ago, but the Union had extended during negotiation talks with GM regarding retirees and healthcare.  GM requested that the Union use a new retiree healthcare fund to pay out future liabilities, in exchange for a one-time payment from GM.  Talks then moved on to pay rates and pensions, sources say.

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger told reporters in Detroit yesterday that GM is the one that won't budge.

"It was a one-way set of negotiations," he said.  "It was going to be General Motors' way at the expense of the workers.  The company walked right up the deadline like they didn't care, and as a result we called a strike...We've done a lot of things to help that company.  But look, there comes a point in time where you have to draw a line in the sand."

"We are disappointed in the UAW's decision," GM spokesman Dan Flores said.  "The bargaining involves complex, difficult issues that affect the job security of our U.S. workforce and the longterm viability of the company."

Meanwhile, the walkout is costing GM 12,200 vehicles in the U.S. each day, CSM Worldwide Inc. estimates.  Over 80 GM manufacturing and parts plants in the U.S. have stalled, and union members warn Canada and Mexico will be next.  GM stock began falling just five hours after the workers walked out.

Doesn't it seem like everyone is at their wit's end lately?  Ten thousand people showing up in Jena, LA to protest a trial...100,000 people marching in D.C. to protest the President...and now 73,000 workers picketing the largest automaker in the United States.  We don't know all of the inside details of the contract negotiations, but wonder if GM is really the one to blame.  Millions of other people around the world don't have healthcare at all - GM workers are given more than most of us are.  Should the employer be responsible for the healthcare...or the government?

Either way, we hope it turns out well, and it is heartening to see citizens willing to stand up for themselves, regardless of the cause and which side you're on.  That's what makes this such a great country:  that we can have a voice, that freedom of speech and expression are protected.

Even ESPN is talking about Britney Spears
Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

During overtime at the game between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Crimson Tide Saturday night, ESPN announcer Mike Patrick randomly said, "I have an important question.  What is Britney doing with her life?"  I can't even tell you how hard this made me laugh, especially when the other announcer went, "Who?"  Here's the clip:

You men may have been mad because it came before a critical play, but when I'm forced to watch football, I seriously live for these moments when the announcers get cheeky.  Last week a conversation about a toe injury led an announcer to launch into the story of Achilles and his heel, and then the other guys ripped him to shreds for going on a tangent about Greek mythology during the game...equally entertaining.  Unfortunately I don't have a clip of that one.
