Mariah Carey:  Keep music in our schools, it's educational
Monday, September 24th, 2007

At VH1's Save the Music 10th Anniversary Gala, stars such as Mariah Carey, John Mayer, Babyface, James Blunt, Vanessa Carlton, and Jon Bon Jovi showed up to show their support for brainpower through music education.

Mariah Carey, flanked by eight body guards (does she really need that many?) told reporters, "I feel like this night is important for children and parents because music actually does help children learn.  It's scientifically proven.  When schools start cutting [music] programs, it's very disheartening."

We agree, although those high-pitched recorders in elementary school could stand to be swapped out...

Ron Paul talks about currency, bank interest rates and moral hazard
Monday, September 24th, 2007

"How can it ever be morally justifiable to deliberately depreciate the value of our currency?...We're in the midst of a crisis today, and the efforts have been directed toward propping up financial markets," Ron Paul says at the House Financial Services Hearing on "Subprime Problem & Solutions" Thursday.

Pretty ironic how he's talking about the middle class, the housing market, and our currency suffering while all of the focus is on Wall Street...and the entire time he's talking the stock ticker is running across the bottom of the screen!

Dita Von Teese joins PETA for the ABC (Animal Birth Control) Campaign
Monday, September 24th, 2007

PETA's new "ABC" Campaign stands for Animal Birth Control, and they're making a splash with burlesque artist, model and actress Dita Von Teese.  Here's the video clip of Ms. Von Teese talking about the importance of spaying or neutering your pets:

Sign PETA' pledge for the ABC campaign, saying that you will not buy an animal from a pet store or a breeder when there are so many stray animals in need!  Did you know about 30% of the animals in shelters are pure breeds?  Pledge to help end animal homelessness today!

Scientists examining how bomb blasts can cause longterm brain injury
Monday, September 24th, 2007

Geoff Ling, an advance-research scientists with the Pentagon, explains that scientists are finding worse damage to the brain from bomb blasts than was originally thought.  He says that even when there are no outward signs of injury from a blast, cells deep within the brain can be altered, and their metabolism changed, causing them to die.  TBI - or Traumatic Brain Injury - is a common injury in the Iraq War.

Symptoms of TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, ranging from headache, confusion, lightheadedness, dizziness, blurred vision, or tired eyes, to chronic migraines, repeated vomiting and nausea, convulsions or seizures, fatigue, agitation, and an inability to wake up.  According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, aprroximately half of severe cases of TBI require surgery to remove or repair hematomas (ruptured blood vessels) or contusions (bruised brain tissue).

Sadly, much of the research on the affects of TBI is coming from blast experiments on animals over the past few years, in various research laboratories, where scientists expose critters to explosions and then test their brain tissue under microscopes.

Dennis Rodman allegedly being investigated for sexual battery
Monday, September 24th, 2007

Dennis Rodman is being investigated by the Orange County Sheriff's Department for alleged sexual battery after an incident at Hennessy's Tavern near Laguna Beach, or so says TMZ.com.  They cite a source as saying Rodman slapped a woman in the butt, hard enough to leave a "major mark."  Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Sheriff's department, told TMZ that "Officers did respond to an incident involving a man and a woman.  A police report was taken, and is currently with the sex crime unit of the Sheriff's department."  They did not confirm whether or not the suspect was indeed Rodman.

We checked the crime bulletin and press releases on the Orange County Sheriff's Department's website, but there is nothing posted regarding this incident.  We didn't leave unamused, though - check out their press bulletins:

Drunk Drvinfing?  What did they do, let the suspect type that up?

If Rodman is the one the Sheriff's Department is looking at, it wouldn't be the first time he's been in trouble with the law.  He was arrested for Felony Burglary in 1979, Drunk Driving in 1999, and assauslt in 1999 after an altercation with Carmen Electra (his then-wife).

General Motors Auto Union strike deadline is up
Monday, September 24th, 2007

The United Auto Workers posted a strike notice last night on the website of UAW Local 160, and the deadline is up at 11:00 a.m. EST today.  It's the tenth day since their current contract with GM was set to expire, and union workers are engaged in a battle over 401(k) and healthcare with the largest automaker in the U.S.

C.E.O Rick Wagoner has advised that he needs to watch healthcare costs as Toyota Motor Corp. and other foreign automakers gain on GM.  He is looking to cut fixed expenses - including labor costs - up to 25% of revenue by 2010. The two sides ahve been unable to reach an agreement on how much GM will contribute to their healthcare trust fund.  The UAW has not gone on strike against General Motors since 1998.

We love it when people fight for their rights!  Will there be banging drums and marches?

What is wrong with fashion designers?  Well, torturing reptiles is "hot right now"

I don't like snakes.  They creep me out, remind me of the Biblical reference, they bite, and they stink like snake pee.  But whether or not you like them, it's hard to dispute that what's being done to them in the name of fashion is not okay.  Here's the shocking truth behind today's "hot" look.

Pythons are hit in the back of the head with machetes.  A hose pipe is forced between their jaws and they are pumped with water until they swell up like a balloon.  After about ten minutes of this, a leather cord is tied around the python's neck so the water can't get out, to loosen the snake's skin.  It's still alive.  Once the skin is acceptably stretched, the python's head is impaled by a meat hook, and it's skin is peeled off to be sent to the tannery.  There are other methods, most equally as cruel.  Like in Indonesia, where pythons are skinned alive and their peeled bodies are just tossed on top of others - they aren't put out of their misery, and die after days of pain, shock, and dehydration.

But somewhere in between their barbaric slaughter in the jungles of Southeast Asia, South America, and elsewhere, and their transformation into bags, shoes, and dresses - the reality of where their skin came from is lost.

"Exotic skins are hot right now, there's a real buzz," says designer Roberto Cavalli.  "I love to use reptile skins because it excites me to take a material that is seen as 'wild' and mix it with a look that shouts glamour and sophistication.  Exotic skin - alligator, crocodile and snake - also gives the impression of being superluxurious and expensive, a look women are into at the moment."

Reptile skin is permeating 2007 fall fashion:  from $5,000 Jimmy Choo purses to $750 Michael Kors belts, from Chloe to Michael Kors, Nancy Gonzalez to Gucci and Dior.  And where laws stop them from selling python, like in California (where law has long banned the sale of products made from python), they simply turn to alternatives like Anaconda.

Yes, torturing reptiles like this shouts glamour and sophistication.  You sick f*cks.

Rob Thomas, Janeane Garofalo, Bill Maher discuss the war
Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

We love us some Rob Thomas (former lead singer of Matchbox 20, now solo artist).  Here's a clip of Rob, Janeane Garofalo (comedian), author Salman Rushdie, and Bill Maher discussing Republicans, the war, and the MoveOn.org ad, on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher .  Good discussion.  Did you know Janeane had so many tattoos?

MySpace News:  Cracking down on link love
Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

Getty Images

Under every blog, we used to post the code to copy and paste into MySpace bulletins, in case you wanted to share the story.  In case you were wondering why we can't do that anymore, MySpace is cracking down on link love.  Eh, it was inevitable.  You may have observed that when you put your cursor over a link on MySpace these days, your status bar doesn't tell you much about where you're going - you just see some nonsense about msplink.com/oogaboogabunchaletters.  That's because MySpace now employs a third-party system - msplink generator - that changes all of your links to go through the msplink site.  It prevents users from linking to "untrusted" sites, and helps curb spamming.

In fact, anyone using MySpace to promote their CafePress store is now totally screwed:  if you link to a store on CafePress through MySpace, it will change the link just to go to CafePress's homepage instead of your store, to stop people from using this social site just for advertising.

Anyhow, when you go to post a bulletin, MySpace automatically converts any links in it (or the code) to msplinks, and in the process somehow screws up IMG SRC code from our bulletins.  So, if you want to repost our stories, you'll have to just stay on the lookout for us to post them on MySpace (that means you have to be our friend on there, so if you're not, go do it).

You can still repost bulletins that any of your friends post, by clicking "reply" to the bulletin, and then copying and pasting the code there into a new bulletin post.

Update on the raid of DMX's house, dead pit bulls
Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

The sheriff who led the raid on DMX's house in Arizona reveals that the dogs were not just malnourished and dehydrated, but suffered from bite wounds.  Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio told the AP that one of the dogs had serious bite wounds and another had trauma to its abdomen.   Another of the dogs was burned so severely that medical exams were inconclusive.

"Someone's going to have to pay for this," Arpaio said.  "We have 12 dogs who were abused and three dogs buried in the yard - someone's going to have to pay."

If DMX is not responsible, then he is probably thinking the same thing.  According to our last report on this, DMX was said to love those dogs like his family.  And if someone brings their digital voice recorder, we're sooooo making another video.

No charges have been filed against any party yet in this case, though, so it has not been determined as of yet who is really responsible.  Stay tuned!

Another Chinese-made product recall:  1 million cribs recalled due to suffocation hazard
Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

On Friday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commision called for the recall of about 1 million Simplicity Inc. cribs after two infants - 6 months old and 9 months old - died.  The cribs were manufactured in China and sold for over nine years:  from January 1998 through May 2007.  The crib was designed with a drop side that ws installed upside down, causing the side to weaken and risk detachment.  Infants could get trapped in that gap, the CPSC says.

Multiple crib models were affected, and the cribs have been sold in many places, including Wal-Mart (surprise, surprise).  If your crib was made by Simplicity, the recall notice and safety instructions are here.  This recall comes just a little over a month since Mattel recalled 18 million toys that were manufactured in China.
