Oprah speaks about her battle
with thyroid problems
Thursday, October 18th,
2007

Aw - I really feel for Oprah on this
one. My father had to have his thyroid removed, and I remember
vividly his battle with weight gain and loss, and even the effects on
his facial expressions from it. Queen O wrote in the new issue of
O magazine, "My body was turning on me. First hyperthyroidism,
which sped up my metabolism and left me unable to sleep for days.
(Most people lose weight. I didn't.) Then hypothryoidism,
which slowed down my metabolism and made me want to sleep all the
time."
On her talk show yesterday, Oprah said, "I
was still feeling really tired, really tired, going around from doctor
to doctor trying to figure out what was wrong, and finally figured out
that I had literally sort of blew out my thyroid."
Thyroid problems can affect men and women
of all ages. About 13 million Americans experience one or more of
the symptomos of thryoid problems. The function of the thyroid
gland is to regulate the speed of your body's rmetabolism, converting
the food we eat into energy for the body. In hypothyroidism,
the thyroid is underactive, making less thyroid hormone than the body
needs. Hyperthyroidism is the opposite - the thyroid is
overactive. To learn more about the symptoms, treatment, and

We're praying for ya, O!
