Ohio Turns Down Casino Again
Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 by Connie T.

Excuse my bloguage, Ohio, but WTF?! Voters in the State of Ohio have turned down the opportunity to have a
casino in Wilmington, Ohio, with over 3 million voting No on Issue 6. The proposed Constitutional Amendment
to allow a casino in Southern Ohio lost 62.75% to 37.25%.
As we wrote
last month, Michigan, Indiana, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania - all states that border Ohio - have commercial
casinos. Gamblers and vacationers travel out of state and contribute to other states' tax dollars.
It is the third time Ohioans have rejected casinos since 1990. The planned $600 million entertainment and
casino resort had the potential to create 5,000 or more new jobs for Ohioans, and would've generated an estimated
$200 million dollars in taxes to be distributed to each county in the Buckeye State.
Ohio did turn blue
this year with the majority voting for Democrat Barack Obama over John McCain. But sheesh, they
still have a long way to go.
The other issues on the Ohio ballot - Issue 1 to extend filing deadlines for
ballot issues; issue 2 to authorize bonds for environmental improvement and conservation; Issue 3 to protect
private property rights in ground water; and Issue 5 to tighten fees, interest rates, and practices of payday check
cashing establishments - all passed with Yes votes.
