Looks like new U.S. President-elect Barack Obama took PETA's request
seriously. Now that their daughters Sasha and Malia have earned their
new puppy, Michelle Obama has announced that the family will indeed adopt a rescued pup from a local
animal shelter.
In addition to PETA's efforts, the Best Friends Animal Society launched a website called
ObamaFamilyDog.com that drew over 50,000 signatures in
just two weeks.
The Humane Society of the US also contacted the Obama campaign to express their hope that
Barack and his family would choose to adopt a dog in need of a home instead of going to a pet store or breeder.
We know Oprah Winfrey is going to love
this move - as do we!
There are between 6 and 8 million dogs and cats going to shelters each year, up to 25% of
which are purebred.
The American Kennel Club hosted a poll to determine the breed of dog that would be
best for the Obama family, and the majority of voters chose the poodle: a hypoallergenic breed that would be less
likely to irritate Malia and Sasha's allergies.
Barack and Michelle deserve a pat on the back!
