Mitt Romney Drops Out Of Presidential Race
Friday,
February 8th, 2008

On a press release
on his website - tucked away, not on the front page, but under Press
Releases - Mitt Romney quietly bowed out of the U.S. Presidential race
yesterday. "Today, addressing the Conservative Political Action
Conference (CPAC)," the press release reads, "Governor Romney announced
that he was suspending his presidential campaign for the sake of
Republican unity and the future of our country."
"As a nation at
war and facing uncertain economic times, the American people cannot
afford the Democrats and their agenda for retreat and economic
slowdown. With today's speech, Governor Romney outlined the
significance of this election and the need for the Republican Party to
remain strong."
Oh, please. Can't we all just get
along and admit that President and V.P., members of the
Republican party, caused this mess; and that the Democratic-led Congress
failed to get us out of it? Everybody is guilty! It is not
one party or the other! Segregating the parties is as silly as
segregating gender or race. We should just eliminate the parties
all together at this point and allow everyone to represent themselves, as
American citizens.
"I want to begin by saying thank you," Mitt
told the CPAC today. "It's great to be with you again. And I
look forward to joining with you many more times in the
future."
"Barack and Hillary have made their intentions clear
regarding Iraq and the war on terror. They would retreat and
declare defeat. And the consequence of that would be
devastating. It would mean attacks on America, launched from safe
havens that make Afghanistan under the Taliban look like child's
play. About this, I have no doubt.
"I disagree with Senator
McCain on a number of issues. But I agree with him on doing
whatever it takes to be successful in Iraq...This is not an easy
decision for me. I hate to lose."
Here is the full press release.
Of the announcement, The Boston Globe said that "Romney ended
his presidential campaign as a venture capitalist who squandered a
quality brand - his own."
The Associated Press said that Mitt
Romney's campaign mirrored his father's (George Romney, Mitt's father,
also ran for President of the United States and
withdrew).
ABC felt quite differently, calling Romney's
exit "graceful" and saying it opened the door to a future run for
Mitt.
What does ConnieTalk say? Well,
I spoke to my parents today: two self-described Republicans who
voted President George W. Bush into office (twice)...and whom I'm sure
are remorseful about that, though they'd never flat-out say that after
all my "I told you so's."
"We have an announcement to make," my
father said. "Romney dropped out today. And your mother and
I have both decided that we're voting for Ron Paul."
Yesterday, I
was on Ron Paul Revolution Radio talking about how
strongly I feel about the Ron Paul campaign. Today, two people I
absolutely never thought would concur with me on politics, are backing
the same candidate the GOP would have you believe is an
underdog.
Today, there is one less man in the race. There
are now five: Hillary Clinton, Mike
Huckabee, John McCain, Barack
Obama, and Ron Paul.
I say, it's
looking much better for Paul. Thanks Mitt - and next time, if
there is one, try to bow out before Super
Tuesday.
