Senate
Passes Victory For American Public,
Loss
For Media Giants
Monday, May 19th, 2008
Gotta love Bill
Moyers: he tells it like it is, y'all. According to
StopBigMedia.com, the
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) received thousands of phone calls
and over a quarter of a million letters, protesting the FCC's plan to
allow the largest media giants to consolidate even
further.
Senator Byron Dorgan
(D-ND) introduced the measure to the Senate, which asked the
Senate to reverse the FCC's ruling - which would have allowed one
company to own the newspaper and broadcast station in the 20
largest metropolitan areas of the US.
Illinois Senator and
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was one of
the proponents of the bill; upon the Senate's overruling of the FCC's
proposed consolidation, Obama released a statement in which he
said:
Today the Senate stood up to Washington special interests by
voting to reverse the FCC's disappointing media consolidation rules that I
have fought against. Our nation's media market must reflect the
diverse voices of our population, and it is essential that the FCC
promotes the public interest and diversity in ownership.
This is a win for the public:
celebrate!

Want to do your part? Here are two things you
can do:
1. Thank the Senate for passing this
measure by writing your Senate rep.
2. Write to
your members in the House of Representatives and encourage
them to follow in the footsteps of the Senate on this
issue!
