McCain Invites Barack Obama To Iraq - Sounds Like A Ploy

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Before we even saw Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's response to this, we were thinking: ploy, ploy, don't fall for it!   Republican candidate John McCain extended an invitation to Obama to visit Iraq together. And by extended, we mean he's crying to the press that Barack has not been to Iraq since 2006. He spoke to a crowd of 500, including members of the press and the home of the Los Angeles Times, proclaiming that Obama needs to be shown "the facts on the ground."

"It's long overdue," McCain said. "It's been 871 days since he was there. And I'm confident that when he goes he will then change his position on the conflict in Iraq." Yeah, the "conflict." Notice how McCain doesn't like to call it what it is--war?

This was such an obvious stunt for headlines and publicity, and Obama called it like he saw it: a "political stunt." Obama added that the fact he hasn't been on the ground in Iraq since 2006 is "not relevant," and that McCain is using this as a diversion.

Bill Burton, a spokesperson for the Obama campaign, said:

Odd that Sen. McCain, who bought the flawed rationale for war so readily, would be lecturing others on their depth of understanding about Iraq.

Sen. McCain stubbornly insists on pursuing the failed Bush policy that continues to cost so much, while Sen. Obama believes it's time to begin a deliberate, careful strategy to remove our troops and compel the Iraqis to take responsibility for their own future.
