Madonna Does Vanity Fair's Third Annual Global Green Cover

March 28th, 2008

Madonna was photographed by Steven Meisel for the May 2008 cover
of Vanity Fair, which will be VF's Third Annual Green issue.
The 2nd annual Green issue of Vanity Fair, in May of 2007, featured Leonardo DiCaprio by ice caps with a baby polar
bear, and VF's first Green issue (May of '06) featured George Clooney, Julia Roberts,
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and Al Gore. Here are all three magazine covers for comparison.

I have a feeling the mag wouldn't have liked yesterday's
guest blog on carbon footprint
controversy...especially since the first Annual Green Issue called global warming "a threat greater
than terrorism." Anyway, Madonna is also rumored
to be shooting two different covers for the UK edition of Elle magazine: a regular edition and a subscribers'
edition.
I dig Madonna, and the new VF cover looks okay, although a corset and dominatrix
boots - as stylish as they may be - don't really do the "green" theme justice. Unless the
article inside will reveal that Madonna's outfit is recycled clothing. To be honest, the part
of this issue I'm most interested in is the exclusive investigation into The Case For White House
War Crimes, especially after seeing Part I
of PBS / Frontline's "Bush's War" series this week. I'm probably in the minority,
though (sigh). Props to VF for pairing up a collector's Madonna issue with an
article on White House war crimes. Same thing we try to do...a little bit of pop culture,
a little bit of politics, a whole lot of fix the world!

Here are three great green tips to consider today:
1. Reuse your water bottle.
2. Start a compost pile.
This is a doubly good thing if you like fishing, because spring is upon us and compost
piles become rich soil that holds lots of thick, juicy earth worms!
3. Instead of hawking
your used books on Amazon or eBay (I know, it's tempting), consider donating them to your
local library instead. That way, you can be sure that the book(s) get the most use possible!
