Here's a story about how evil and
greedy people can be, so take note: if you accidentally buy
someone else's amputated, embalmed leg at an auction, and they ask
for it back...give it to them, huh?
John Wood of Spartanburg, S.C. lost
his leg after a 2004 plane crash, and stored it in a grill in his
storage locker. After Wood got behind on the rent for the
storage unit, the belongings inside were auctioned off. He'd
planned to have the leg cremated with him. The sale of the
leg led to a three-year court battle: first the buyer,
Shannon Whisnant, called the authorities and asked them to take
the leg away. But when the leg story became the hot gossip
of the town, Whisnant had a quick change of heart (aforementioned
evil and greed), and wanted to show the leg at Halloween, charging
money for people to view it.
He told local media he was willing to
go to court over it and wanted to charge $3 admission for adults,
$1 for children. Whisnant said, "It's a hell of a
conversation piece. I bought it. It's
mine."
Police finally returned the leg to
its rightful owner, and police Capt. Tracy Ledford "chuckled his
way through" an interview with Reuters about it. "The guy
[Whisnant] don't have a leg to stand on. He's not getting
the leg back."
