John McCain And Ellen DeGeneres Talk Gay Marriage
Thursday, May 22nd,
2008
How awkward is this: Republican
presidential candidate John McCain, who has said in the
past that he's "proud to have led an effort in [Arizona] to protect the
sanctity of marriage as between a man and a woman," and who supported the
1996 Defense of Marriage Act (which banned federal recognition of gay
marriage and domestic partnerships), was on the Ellen DeGeneres Show
today.
Ellen DeGeneres, if you didn't know,
is in the planning stages of a now-legal California wedding
celebration with her partner, Portia de Rossi, and has been discussing it
excitedly on her show.
So Ellen turned to "the elephant in the
room," and she and John McCain began a discussion on gay marriage.
Though it had the potential for heated discussion and/or booing, both of
them kept their cool and it actually ended up more pointless than anything
else.
