John
Mayer Stands Up To
Dallas Cowboys Fans For
Jessica Simpson
Wednesday,
January 16th, 2008

I'm sure we've been harsh to Jessica Simpson on
this site before: her fur- and snakeskin-wearing ways (and deer antler
purses, for that matter) have rubbed us the wrong way more than
once. But John Mayer has a point here. Simpson has been
getting a lot of flack for her relationship with Dallas Cowboys
quarterback Tony Romo, from the Cowboys' loss the first time she
attended a game, to the impromptu trip with Romo to Mexico before the
playoffs, all the way up to the Cowboys losing the playoffs.
Well,
John Mayer wants you to know: don't mess with his Texas ex,
please! Mayer posted the following on his official blog yesterday:
Dear Dallas and Surrounding Areas,
This
isn't a sports blog, and it isn't a publicity stunt (but have at me
if it feels right).
This is about doing what I think is right as
a person, in this case speaking my mind.
I have never known
anyone to have more pride in their home state and their upbringing in it
than Jessica Simpson has in Texas. I don't really follow sports,
but I have played some of my biggest and best concerts in your state,
and having witnessed how dynamic the spirit there is, I'm betting
emotions are running high right about now.
All witty barbs,
blogs, and fashion policing aside [he's got us there], that girl loves
Texas more than you know. It's one of her most defining traits as
a person. So please don't try and take that away from her.
(You probably wouldn't be able to, but it's less work for all
involved.)
I just thought it would mean something coming from the
guy who has the absolute least to gain from this. And if I'm
out of line in having written it, too bad. I can spare a
Wednesday's worth of bad press if it means sticking up for a good
soul.

Simpson, whose likeness was used for cut-out masks by opposing teams at
Cowboys' games, has been blamed by many a fan for the Cowboys' loss.
Truth be told, though, people, Romo played a fine postseason - his players
were the ones who kept dropping the ball! But everybody needs a
scapegoat.
Mayer - whose last blog was
a lecture on why you shouldn't drive drunk - is quite the knight in
shining ex armor. He has a point, though...I can't count how many
interviews I've read in which Jessica has said, "I'm from Texas...I don't
think we have those there?"
Wait! There's more! More News >>
