NBC's Meredith Viera had to apologize for Jane Fonda's behavior yesterday
after Fonda said the a word that's not safe for daytime TV
audiences: c*nt. Except that she was saying it in
reference to a monologue title she was given that she refused, and her
point was that she was turned off by it. But that matters little to
NBC, who just moments later had Viera apologizing on behalf of Fonda and
NBC for the word that aired all over the East Coast live.
Fonda, Eve Ensler (playwright
to "The Vagina Monologues"), and Viera were discussing Fonda being the hit
off-Broadway series. With a segment focused on a play where the
women talk openly about their genitalia, how is anyone surprised
here? The entire interview
was about "The Vagina Monologues," and they had "The V
Word" and "Vagina Monologues" right there on the bottom of
the screen the entire time. I think anyone who showed up
or tuned in was forewarned.
"I was asked to do a monologue called
'Cunt,' and I said, 'I don't think so. I've got enough problems,'"
Jane Fonda said. "Then I came to New York to see Eve and it changed
my life."
It didn't even look like it registered on Viera's face in
the first place, but not long after, Meredith said (probably via her IFB),
"Jane Fonda inadvertently said a word from the play that you don't say on
television. It was a slip and obviously she apologizes and so do
we.
"We would do nothing to offend the audience, so please accept
that apology."
No prob, Meredith - we weren't offended in the first
place. Well, to be honest, we didn't watch it in the first
place, until it hit the net (MSNBC hasn't answered our boycott petition yet). But, still, we weren't
offended at the replay.
