Holy Smokes, It's 420

Whatever your relationship or lack thereof to cannabis, you likely
know that today is 420, the counterculture holiday of marijuana, if just by what's on
TV. G4TV is
showing a marathon of reefer-related comedies, starting with Half-Baked and going onward
all night.
Even the History Channel is getting in on the action, showing various shows about
banned substances this week. Isn't it odd that there are commercials on cable television
openly celebrating 420, when the substance has been federally regulated since the 1930's in America,
when the Federal Bureau of Narcotics was established?
But from Argentina to Belgium, from some
states in Australia to the entire country of Denmark, from India to Portugal, Spain, Pakistan, portions
of the Netherlands, and on, marijuana is legal, if not only for private use.
On the rare occasion that
my dear old Dad gets around to reading my website, he's commented that I should never publish
anything about cannabis because I could get put "on a list" (that was actually the result of
this wee quote by
Rob Thomas). Well, I don't do anything illegal; I even wear my seatbelt before I start the
car. So list me away.
This year, proponents of legalization are insisting
that we are on the move towards acceptance of the plant dubbed "weed" both as a medicine and a form of
entertainment. What do you think? Will we see it in our lifetime?
