Michigan Considers Medical Marijuana; Ohio, Casinos
Friday, October 3rd, 2008 by Connie T.

There are some interesting Proposals making their way across the nation
this November. We've mentioned Prop 2,
which is on the ballot for California and would protect animals from harm while also making
the food supply safer for everyone. But it's not just the Golden State: there are big issues
on the books for the Midwest, too.
In Michigan, voters will have an opportunity to vote
on whether or not seriously ill people should be legally allowed the relief of medicinal marijuana.
The issue is Prop 1, and would allow Michigan residents to grow and possess small amounts
of cannabis for medical purposes with or without a doctor's approval. There are many
positive results for sick people in the plant, including relief from nausea and the ability to
regain their hunger, relief from pain, insomnia, and other symptoms of various diseases including
cancer.
On November 4th, voters in Ohio get to choose whether or not casino gambling
is allowed within state lines. Currently, Michigan, Indiana, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania - all
states bordering Ohio - there are
commercial casinos. Instead of sending all of our gambling money out of state, Ohio voters
have the choice to vote on Issue 6, which would permit a casino near Wilmington, Ohio
and distribute taxes from it to all counties in the state.
Another important issue in
Ohio for November is Issue 5, which would change the state's check cash lending fees,
interest rates, and practices to curb overcharging on payday loans. We like this idea but
would also like to see it implemented for
commercial banks as well.
