Now We've Seen It All

So Timex and Core77 held a contest to see who could
design the best futuristic time-telling device. The winner was a sticker watch
that can be stuck wherever, designed by Alexey Koptev, listed as an "Enthusiast"
from Russia. Perhaps more interesting, however, were the next two runners-up: a
translucent clock that you wear on your thumbnail; and a contact-like device
that you wear on your eyeball.
Napoleon Merana, Steffen Schubert, and David
Takacs of the United States designed the fingernail watch. We find it quite
humorous that it reads 4:20.
And the eye clock was designed by Peter Martins,
a student from Portugal. This one really freaks us out: the "Sublimex" periodically
flashes the time so quickly that the brain isn't conscious of how it got the information,
but you always know what time it is.
One of the judges of the competition, Andrewes,
brought up a great point: "The idea of having an invisible timekeeper transmitting the
time through a subliminal message to the eye is original yet at the same time rather
worrying. One can imagine that the time messages would quickly be supplemented with
advertisements, perhaps without the user's consent or awareness."
You know what,
we have the time on our cell phone. That's good enough for us.
