Equal Pay, Equal Pay, Equal Pay!
Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009 by Connie T.

You may have already heard this news, but it's certainly worth celebrating
again. One of the first bills that President Barack Obama signed into law was the Lily
Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. The bill will make it easier for women workers to sue employers for
pay discrimination, nullifying a 2007 Supreme Court decision that gave employees only 180 days
to act on pay discrimination.
Lily Ledbetter worked for Goodyear Tire for 19 years in Alabama,
and was not aware that she was being paid less than her male counterparts until the end of her career there.
Women still receive only 77 to 78 cents on the dollar on average compared to what men receive in the same positions,
according to the U.S. Census Bureau. But now, women and families have a better chance at fighting the wage
discrimination that has haunted the female gender for...well, forever.
This is progress, but there is
still a long ways to go. For the latest news, issues, and action alerts to protect and progress women's rights,
