A
Possible Victory
For Both Cattle And Beef Eaters
Wednesday, May 21st, 2008
Strange that there could be a victory
for both vegetarians and meat-eaters alike, eh? But a new bill could
mean just that. The Downed Animal and Food Safety Protection
Act could protect both cows and people, as it would ban USDA
inspectors at slaughterhouses from approving meat from downed cattle,
sheep, pigs, goats, and equines. According to the HSUS, at least 13 of the 16
cases of mad cow disease in North America have involved downed animals;
and in February, the largest beef recall in U.S. history was revealed after
animals who appeared sick, injured, and unable to walk were led into the
food supply.
"For far too long, sick and crippled animals have been
allowed into the food supply, subjecting them to needless torment and
putting consumers at risk," says Wayne Pacelle, President &
CEO of the Humane Society of the United States. "Thanks in part
to many thousands of animal advocates who emailed and called public
officials...the USDA is moving to close the downer loophole."
The Downed Animal and Food Safety Protection Act -
HR 661/S. 394 - is a bipartisan bill introduced by Sen. Daniel Akaka
(D-HI) and Reps. Gary Ackerman (D-NY) and Steven LaTourette (R-OH).
But the Bill is pending and needs your support!
