ABC is dodging bullets after a comment Teri Hatcher's character made on Desperate Housewives angered the Philippine Embassy.  The script had Teri's character, Susan, tell a gynecologist that she had to check his diplomas in case they came "from some med school in the Philippines."  A wave of protest began after the episode aired, with condemning statements being sent by government officials in Manila and an online petition for an apology from ABC getting more than 100,000 signatures in less than a week.

There was a brief apology then issued by ABC:

"The producers of DH and ABC Studios offer our sincere apologies for any offense cause by the There was no intent to disparage the integrity of any aspect of the medical community in the Philippines.  As leaders in broadcast diversity" [snort] "we are committed to presenting sensitive and respectful images of all communites featured in our programs," ABC said in a press statement.

"I am morally offended by the statement because it betrayed the racial prejudice and denigrates the excellent performance of world-class Filipino doctors in the U.S.," said Senator Miriam Santiago, whose sister works as a docter in L.A.  Senator Rodolfo Biazon has proposed a ban on the entire series.
