Death
Toll In Myanmar
May Be 128,000 Or More
Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Very sad. For our human rights
article of the day - in honor of Blog Catalog's Unite For Human Rights
Day - the spotlight is on Myanmar and Burma. As we reported
earlier this week, it is estimated that 1.5 million Burmese are on the
brink of a massive public health catastrophe. Today, the
International Red Cross has announced an estimate that shows the death
toll from the disastrous cyclones in Myanmar is looking to be around
128,000.
The Huffington Post reports the United
Nation's warning: that more deaths will follow if the military
regime does not let more aid in, now.
It is also estimated that
220,000 people are missing. The Burmese regime has not been allowing
aid to the Irrawaddy Delta (or Ayeyarwady Delta), and reports confirm
regime officials have been selling both international aid
supplies in local markets and keeping it for themselves.

It can't
wait.
