I've gotten a lot of feedback on the video we
posted about Mike Huckabee's son, David Huckabee, killing a stray dog at
Boy Scout Camp. (Here's the video, if you haven't seen
it):
Since the video was posted, we've gotten
positive and negative feedback split down the board:
"Huckabee is
another CFR scumbag who will do anything to get into office. He and his
morbidly obese son have the same character. -
Patriot2572
"Assaulting someones children for political gain shows
a lack of integrity and it is totally WRONG no matter how you spin it." -

"Rumors? Slander? Check out the Newsweek story! Check out
the link showing the letter reporting the abuse in 1998! Stick your
head in the sand all you want, but Huckabee just went DOWN on this one.
Nobody wants someone running the country who produced a psychopathic
budding serial killer son!!! Evil..... poor innocent dog..." -

"Watched a video on him raising taxes and he lied about
the reasons he raised the taxes. Then I watched a video about how he
petitioned the parole board to let a rapist go and he lied about it. Then
I watched a video about the campaign gifts and government jobs he then
handed out and he lied about it. Now he lies about why the dog was killed
and pressures the cops. We have had enough liars from Arkansas. I wouldn't
be calling myself a Christian publicly if I was this guy." -

Back and forth, comments and e-mails praising or
condemning the story. And then, we received a letter from a friend
of the Huckabee family.
Your
sentiments about dogs and other animals are certainly noble. I have a
German Sheppard that I love very much and is a member of my family. That
being said, you have clearly never lived in a place where dogs suffer
because they are not loved, are not fed, are abused and then dumped onto a
boyscout camp.
"Killing a dog is not killing a person and saying
that only trivializes your message (which I read as 'Mike Huckabee is bed
because his son makes mistakes'). Attacking someone for what they did when
they were a kid is the lowest form of low. I happen to be a life long
Democrat, a life long animal lover and a friend of David Huckabee. He is
not violent, he is not a sociopath and he did not willfully torture a dog.
He put himself into a situation that got out of hand. He is impulsive, he
is forgetful and he is a human, one that makes mistakes (3 of which you
point out in your lovely video).
"You ever make 3 mistakes Connie?
David has two dogs that live wonderful lives. Whenever he has to go out on
a campaign trip I always love taking care of Scout, his black lab, who is
the sweetest thing in the world. If you want to attack Mike Huckabee there
is plenty of ammo, but please, leave David alone.
"I didn't post
this in a public forum because I thought that perhaps if I addressed it to
you you might have a change of heart. I'm not some stark raving lunatic
who loves Mike Huckabee. I'm a friend of a good man who has real feelings,
real regrets and happens to be the son of a guy running for
President."
I'm not going to run my reasoning for this
again. But I will tell you what I told this man, who wrote to
me:
"The decision to run that video was one of great conflict for
me. I do not believe in running a smear campaign just because of
politics. This one I take personally.
And this is not about
David, this is ultimately about his father. Unfortunately for
David, his father is running for President of the United States of
America, and his every action will be scrutinized. My issue with
what happened at that Boy Scout camp revolves around how Mike Huckabee
handled it. I most certainly have seen dogs abused, neglected,
abandoned, mistreated, starved, hurt, and "euthanized." Not just
here, but overseas. In countries where animals run astray no less
common than the birds in the sky, because they are not cared for.
Thankfully, that is not as run-of-the-mill here in the States as much as
it is problematic elsewhere.
That being said, what David did to
that dog, by all accounts, is still nothing short of unfathomable.
And the way it was handled by his father, his moral leader at that time,
was obviously brushed off as fleetingly and dismissively as it was on
Larry King Live by Mike himself.
There was not one apology for
the animal. Not one. It does not take stoning, hanging, and
throat-slitting to put an animal down, and there are proper authorities
for that purpose, not Boy
Scouts. Mike showed a complete and utter lack of compassion for
the tragedy that dog suffered. As President of our great country,
he would have to make decisions for the safety and protection of
animals, including endangered species. These issues come up
regularly, and we all wish our leader to be a fair and commiserative
person.
From the way this incident was handled by Mike Huckabee,
I feel it to be very relevant to how we can expect him to react to the
wellbeing of strays, the issue of euthanization in shelters,
overpopulation of domesticated animals, even pit bull bans and
dogfighting issues that may be heading to Congress.
And I take it
personally because no one did so for that dog. If David Huckabee
indeed has dogs of his own now, he should understand how I
feel.
I apologize to you, that you feel personal responsibility
to defend David or the Huckabee family. If you have a statement
from David that he would like published, I will do so. Otherwise,
I feel quite strongly about this issue, and therefore cannot help
you. I'm sorry.
