Mike
Huckabee: Would Our
Country
Turn Out Like His
Son? Tuesday, December 18th, 2007
Not that I think there's any
chance of Republican Candidate Mike Huckabee winning the 2008 elections,
but it stands to reason that instead of viewing his son's past as a
smear attempt, we might want to consider: if a child is not reared into a peaceful, law-abiding
citizen, ought his father be considered fit to raise an entire
country?

Former Arkansas governor and Southern Baptist
minister Mike Huckabee has a 26-year-old son named David who has made
his way into the media. David could be considered a problem
child. Battling with an obesity problem for most of his life that
appears worse than his father's (who notoriously shed 110
pounds and ironically speaks out against childhood obesity), David began
getting into trouble at a young age.
At just 17 years old, David was alleged to be
involved in the hanging of a stray dog at a Boy Scout camp in
1998 (some sources say the dog's throat was also slit and he
was pelted with stones), which led to his dismissal as a counselor at
Camp Pioneer in Hatfield, Arkansas. Yet, despite an outcry by a
national animal rights group, the state police never granted
to the request to investigate the incident. John Bailey, the
director of Arkansas state police, told Newsweek that Governor
Huckabee's chief of staff and personal lawyer both leaned on him to
write a letter officially denying the local prosecutor's
request.
In December of 2001, David was slapped with fines for running two businesses in
Jonesboro, Arkansas without a license. After the Arkansas State
University Herald picked up the story, he eventually paid the city
collector with 6,250 pennies in a bag.
In April of this year,
David Huckabee, now 26, was arrested for attempting to board an airplane with a
handgun a Little Rock National Airport. After being released from
Pulaski County Jail, David called it "a silly mistake." It was a
Glock with a clip in it, and Huckabee claimed he forgot it was in his
bag. There were eight live rounds in the clip but no bullet in the
chamber. He pleaded guilty.
If you ask me, the offspring
of a candidate seeking to lead our entire nation is absolutely
relevant. And with a child that is questionably violent and
misguided - is it worth taking that chance?
