Kudos To Stephen Colbert, But This Isn't Funny
Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Comedy Central, ever
the pioneer in confronting U.S. politics head-on, is something I watch
often. I respect it. The problem is, I haven't laughed while
watching it in a long time. And that's not a negative reflection on
Comedy Central, at all, but to the state of politics--the
question remains why some of the most truthful commentary on the current
administration and our foreign relations may only be presented to us in
the context of humor.
For example. On The Colbert
Report today, Stephen Colbert gave a "Tip of the hat and wag
of the finger" to the U.S. troops in Afghanistan, for making President
George W. Bush jealous. How? Well, on March 13th, Bush visited
the troops there, and actually told them: "I must say, I'm a little
envious...I think it would be a fantastic experience to be on the front
lines." No joke (pun intended).
Here's the
video:
I applaud Comedy Central. In January, you voted
them the 2nd highest specific mass media outlet you trust the most in our
"Which Do You Trust?" poll. Although most of you
chose "None of the above," but hey, at least they're getting there.
And they were higher than CNN, NBC, and even C-Span. And I trust you
the viewer above all.
I will continue to watch Comedy Central, even
though I can't even make myself laugh. Because real lives have
been lost in Iraq and Afghanistan for five years now, and my sense of
patriotism isn't allowing me to laugh anymore. And I'm sick and
tired of being sick and tired.
