Candidates Agree On Quality Charter Schools
Thursday, October 30th, 2008 by Connie T.

I know, I know, you're all sick of hearing about election-related politics by
now. You've seen Barack Obama and John McCain on everything from campaign videos
to cupcakes, on TV and in action figure form,
on signs and in magazines, on the radio and in your mailbox. We get it.
But hang in there,
because we are less than one week away! And then you'll be back to getting your political
fix strictly from ConnieTalk.
Anyhow, we find it relative to point out that there is something
Barack Obama and John McCain agree on: in the last presidential debate, both candidates gave a nod
at the importance of high quality charter schools. A plus for education! McCain said, Choice
and competition amongst schools is one of the key elements that's already been proven in places like
New Orleans and New York City and other places, where we have charter schools, where we take good
teachers and we reward them and promote them. Barack stated,McCain and I actually
agree on two things that he just mentioned. Charter schools, I doubled the number of charter schools in
Illinois despite some reservations from teachers' unions. I think it's important to foster
competition inside the public schools. Charter schools are elementary or secondary
schools that receive public funding but have different rules than regular public schools, in
exchange for extra accountability / results specified in their "charter." Some have special
curriculums related to certain fields.
Thanks, Denis!
