Bush Backs McCain,
Throws
Around The Term Conservative
Sunday, February 10th,
2008
For all the
butt-kissing compliments former Governor Mike Huckabee had for
President Bush during the Republican debates, it didn't get him the golden
seal of approval from our current President. (That's actually the second
recent brushoff Huck has gotten; Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared to be
chummying up to Huckabee but ended up endorsing McCain.) If you had any doubt
about John McCain, this will probably change your mind in one way or
another (hopefully the sane direction): President George W. Bush -
despite he and Vice President Dick Cheney's statements inferring they
would not back a candidate for the 2008 election - is backing Senator John
McCain as a "true conservative" today.
"If John is the nominee, he
has got some convincing to do to convince people that he is a solid
conservative, and I'll be glad to help him if he is the nominee," Bush
told Fox News Sunday. "But he is a conservative. Look, he is
very strong on national defense. He is tough fiscally. He
believes that tax cuts ought to be permanent. He is pro-life.
His principles are sound and solid, as far as I'm
concerned."
President Bush also said, "I know him well. I
know his convictions. I know the principles that drive him and no
doubt in my mind, he is a true conservative."
He also dissed Senator Barack Obama as a
political mystery who would coddle our foreign enemies and attack our
allies. Where that came from is very unclear as we've heard Obama
imply nothing of the sort.
Whew. Okay. First of all,
let's address the smaller annoyance of all of this: talking about
the budget and tax cuts and conservatism has nothing to do with being
pro-life or pro-choice, so bringing that up was shady and
irrelevant. We can't imagine there ever being a day where all of
America is going to agree on abortion vs. right to life, so making that an
issue when there are so much more urgent things at stake with this country
right now. A smart candidate would say leave it up to the states and
let's all get along - lets stop making this an emotional factor in every
single election.
Second of all: Bush is the
absolute last opinion we would trust on the word
conservative! Conservatism in the sense Bush is referring to is
meant as fiscal frugality: cutting spending where it's too high and
lowering federal debt.
The U.S.
national debt right now is over $9 trillion dollars: it's the
equivalent of every single living person in the U.S. having contributed
$30,384.72 in debt to our federal deficit (which we did not, this
administration did).
When President Bush took office, we had a
surplus of $284 billion. A surplus - that means
extra.
And the only two true
Conservatives in this race - Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul - are being
ignored. A real conservative is what we read right now to fix the
damage the current administration did to our budget. But Huckabee
wants to stay in this war for much longer, which means more
spending. And his Fair Tax Plan could hurt our economy.
While McCain is running around with the
liberal Kennedy's, grinning for the big cable moguls, and joining
in "How do we beat the bitch?" jokes about Hillary Clinton; Mike
Huckabee and Congressman Ron Paul have been hammering out their plans to
fix the budget. Yet McCain is the only "true conservative?"
Wow, there are just no words.
Well, we saw this coming all the way
back in December of 2006 when we first saw this picture:
