We were wondering when someone was going to get ticked off by NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg changing
the law in his favor. Regardless of whether or not you like the guy, this is the smaller scale equivalent
if President George W. Bush had changed the law to extend his own term at running the country.
Bloomberg
initiated overturning the law that limited mayoral tendency to 2 terms, citing the economic crisis as his
reasoning. He also said this change was needed too soon to wait for the public to vote on it.
A coalition
of elected officials and citizens have now sued
billionaire Bloomberg for going against the Constitution by changing this law without a public vote. The lawsuit, filed
in federal court, states, Democratic principle does not crumble in the face of a weakened economy,
nor should it be violated for the direct benefit of specific individual elected officials. New Yorkers
voted twice before on the issue, and chose to keep mayors' and city officials' terms at two.
