We all know that money talks. But does
it need to talk this loudly? 66-year-old billionaire
businessman-turned-Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has
announced via an op-ed piece in The New York Times today that
he will not be running for President this year. According to
Bloomberg, others have encouraged him to run - and though he had a
$1 billion campaign prepared if he decided to do so, he instead is looking
towards which candidate he might back. And? Do we
care?
The owner of Bloomberg LP, and flip-flopper of
parties - first he was a lifelong Democrat, then he ran on the
Republican ballot to become the 108th Mayor of New York City - has
brought us what?
The same man who told a New York magazine
reporter who asked whether he has used marijuana, "You bet I did.
And I enjoyed it," has financially backed ad campaigns against the
cannabis plant, and supported the throw-the-book-at-you drug laws enforced by
the overworked NYPD.
The same man who claims to be for personal liberties
(for example, he is for abortion rights and same-sex marriage), is also
the reason for NYC having the strictest anti-tobacco
laws in the U.S. (only 5% of the entire world have anti-smoking laws of
that magnitude), and is an avid supporter of limiting gun owner's rights. He
backed the legislation that passed in June of 2006, which increased the
mandatory minimum sentence for being caught with an unregistered, loaded
handgun, for any purpose.
In fact, he formed the organization Mayors
Against Illegal Guns in May of 2007.
Bloomberg has attacked
conservative stances on immigration - saying, "We're not going to deport
12 million people, so let's stop this fiction" - yet supports a federal
ID database with fingerprints and DNA to keep track of all U.S.
citizens.
He is a billionaire businessman who speaks out of
both sides of his mouth. And people are feigning disappointment
that he's not running for President of the United States? Are you
kidding me?
If New York City makes it to the end of his
term on December 31, 2009 without Doublethink being outlawed, they
should be so lucky!
Everything is so screwed up. Another businessman, attorney/politician Ralph Nader, fellow media
darling, is plastered everywhere in the papers for deciding to run for the
FIFTH time this late in the game; Mayor Bloomberg makes front page news for
NOT running. Meanwhile, Republican candidates Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul cannot get a word in
edgewise on TV or most of the national publications, and they are the only two
Repubs left in the race besides John McCain. And who's getting the coverage
there? Screwy, screwy, screwy.
