A Letter To The Senate On Bank Rescue Plan

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008  by Connie T.

While I am often charged up about politics, there have been few instances in my lifetime in which I have been so affected, emotionally or otherwise, by a political decision that it has kept me up at night. The $700 billion bank bailout measure that's going before the House on Friday is one of them.

Here is my letter to my Senators, George Voinovich and Sherrod Brown of Ohio, both of whom had me tossing and turning in betrayal-laced insomnia last night, after they - and the majority of the Senate - passed the financial rescue measure for Wall Street that 93% of America opposes. I sent them off this morning. Feel free to copy and paste it as your own.

Let me begin by expressing my utter disappointment. You would certainly agree that the State of Ohio has been hit very hard by the recent downfall of our nation's economy. In these trying times, we depend on the Representatives we've elected to Congress to represent what is in the best interest of the people (hence the term).

There is no Wall Street in Ohio, Senator. There is no street hustling and bustling with stock traders and a bell-ringing ceremony, where staggering amounts of money are traded and a plus sign can make your day, week, or lifetime.

Throughout this great nation, in fact, there is only 7% of the entire population that is focused on the welfare of the big bankers on Wall Street, who approve of the government's rushed "rescue" plan for financial institutions that bit off more than they can chew. Seven percent.

And yet, yesterday, the majority of the Senate - including you - decided for us that taxpayers are to pay $700 billion to corporations who trade in five minutes what many of us will make in a year, five years, or our lives.

There certainly could not be any mirrors in the vicinity of the Senate chamber, Sir, for it's impossible to think that any of you who voted Yea last night could bear to look into one.

You were not elected to do what is best for Wall Street. You may argue a trickle-down effect until you're blue in the face and it won't put food on the tables of millions of Americans who are finding it difficult to keep the lights on, let alone keep the IRS satisfied.

Do you consider the American people to be so weak as to roll over and accept this sort of whim from the very administration that has led us into such economic peril? Can you not understand that to print an additional $700 billion to $3 trillion that we do not have will only lower the value of the currency that we all depend on? Have you not seen the national deficit? Do you care so little for all of us? For your future generations? For our country?

I will never vote for you on a ballot for any form of political office as long as I shall live. But most importantly, I want you to know that you have made me ashamed of my State today, and that I will forever remember your name for that reason. Here's to your legacy, Sir.
