This may be the best news we've heard all day so
far. Angelina Jolie paid a visit to CNN yesterday while
on her trip to Iraq, where she still is working with U.S. soldiers
and Iraqi civilian refugees; and in her attempt to bring attention to an
international crisis, she was interrupted by the interviewer - Arwa Damon
- asking if Jolie was pregnant. Jolie was apparently unaware that
CNN has been dabbling in sensationalism for a few years now (if Paris
Hilton on Larry King Live was any clue) - and
girlfriend put CNN in their place.
"There doesn't seem to be a real coherent plan to
help them," Jolie spoke of the refugees in Iraq. "There's lots of
goodwill. Lots of discussion, but there seems to be a lot of talk at
the moment, and a lot of pieces that need to be put together. I'm
trying to figure out what they are."
"I came to the region about 6
months ago, I first went to Syria because I work with UNHCR and there are
1.5 million refugees in Syria alone from Iraq and while I was there, I
went inside and met with some internally displaced people...there are over
4 million people displaced and of the 2 million internally displaced it's
estimated that 58% are under 12 years old."
Angelina said that the UNHCR needs to be more active
inside Iraq, and that there needs to be more people there from the UN to
count and register people, and that as in any humanitarian crisis, we all
need to be more aware and concerned for the widespread instability the
Middle East is facing.
"I don't see borders," Jolie said. "I see
lives and I see children and this is...and environment where there is a
war but there is [also] a humanitarian crisis. And they have to be
addressed simultaneously. We can't wait for one to end to then
finally take the time to address the other; it has to start right
now."
The interview was going well - with Jolie speaking
intelligently and eloquently, as she always does - and suddenly, out of
nowhere, Damon asked here, "There are reports out of Hollywood
that..."
Before Damon got the question out of her mouth, Jolie
stopped her. Angelina - such a smartie! - knew right away that Damon
was preparing to refer to the pregnancy rumors that have been circulating
in the "celebrity news" underbelly.
"Oh
don't." Angie told her. "Stop it. Stay true to
your tradition. You're CNN. Don't do it."
"I know, that's
why I have to -" Damon stuttered.
"But I don't have to
answer. OKAY?" Jolie replied.
This last exchange - which
ended the interview - was posted on CNN's original transcript of the interview,
but was cut out of the video. Gee, wonder why?
