Analog Signal
May Continue Near The Mexican Border
Friday, April 18th, 2008 by Esmerelda
We've all heard about the February 17,2009
deadline for all stations to convert to a digital signal.
This means that those of you using an antenna for local
stations must purchase a box to convert your signal into something your
television can use if your set doesn't already have a digital tuner
integrated into it.
There is a $40 rebate program going on when you
purchase a digital converter. Coupons for the rebate are available
wherever converters are sold.
The thing is that a bill (the DTV
Border Fix Act) has been introduced into the House of Representatives to
allow qualifying stations within 50 miles of the Mexican border to
continue sending analog signal until 2014.
The idea is that many
households along the border receive signal from both countries and English
is a second language for them and they may be slower to change than the
rest of the country. Allowing analog transmission to continue would allow
more time for them to transition and they could continue to receive local
news in the meantime.
What's your take on it? Should they have more
time or shouldn't they?
