Raise awareness
about stray animals Monday, August 6th,
2007

The Humane Society of
the United States estimates that approximately 6 to 8 million strays
enter shelters each year - and these are just the ones that are
counted. Since there are no nationwide regulations that require
shelters to keep statistics on homeless pets (nor on euthanasia of
them), it is difficult to come up with the real number. Just
what's accounted for, though, says enough.

1.
If you see that someone has more pets than they can control, or know
someone who hasn't had their pets spayed or neutered yet, talk to them
about checking out a list of animal clinics that are low-cost...they are
all over the country.
2. If you or someone you know is looking for a pet,
there are millions that need homes. The HSUS reports that
around 25% of the animals in shelters are purebred. I
can't get enough of PetFinder.com - it is a no-kill animal rescue organization that
people use to list pets that need a home across the U.S., and so is AnimalShelter.org
.
3. Urge our legislators to take a
more active role in the rights of our animals. The Petition
Site's Animal Welfare section has new petitions daily that need supporters.
Bookmark the page and check back with it, and/or
contact Congress
yourself!
4. Spread the
word. Copy and paste the code below into a new bulletin
post for your MySpace friends to read!
5. And, as always,
WEAR YOUR CAUSE!! It is an amazingly effective way of
reaching people. |
