What will you be doing this Labor Day?
Thursday, August 30th, 2007

It's that time again:  Monday is Labor Day.  It has been celebrated on the first Monday of September in the U.S. since the 1880's - the holiday was created in 1882 by the Central Labor Union, to establish a day of rest for the "working man."  It is a day to celebrate the strength, freedom, and leadership of the American worker.  But what has the American worker become today?

As shown in the recent Top 25 Best and Worst Paying Jobs in America, it seems that those who arguably work the hardest - farm workers and laborers, dishwashers, maids, textile workers - get the least reimbursement.

Yesterday, I saw a commercial on television that made my jaw drop - I don't remember ever having seen a commercial that actually addressed this issue.  Here it was:

So I mosy on over to AmericanWorker.org.  They state that while 54 million working age Americans don't have a job, almost 28 million U.S. jobs are filled by foreign workers.  And besides that, 3.5 million American jobs have been outsourced to foreign countries over the last seven years.

The commercial was paid for by the Coalition for the Future American Worker (the CFAW), a collective group of professional traide organizations, population/environment organizations, and immigration reform groups.  And believe it or not, CNN - who is often criticized for selectively reporting news due to advertiser relations - has Lou Dobbs reporting on the companies that are outsourcing American jobs.  The list is enormous, and can be viewed here - with every company on there from our personal most-hated, AT&T, to Time Warner (who I spent 47 minutes on the phone with yesterday, only to find out they sent me an old cable box and I have to return it myself to get a working one).

Lou Dobbs is on a rampage, in fact and it taking no prisoners:

Go Lou Dobbs!

So, this Labor Day, let's take a stand on supporting the American worker, because that is what the holiday is really all about.

1.  Sign the Petition that over 70,000 citizens have already signed:
     - The National Worker's Petition to Save American Jobs
2.  Here is a graphic for your website or MySpace profile, that links back to this article and the petition:

Happy Labor Day!!
